Gentlemen’s knives first gained popularity around the same time as the Industrial Revolution, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the concept remains essentially the same — sleek, discreet folding blades that are slender and easy to conceal — but with much more modern stylistic elements and materials.

Oknife’s Aion is a perfect execution of that classic style through a modern lens. It has just received a significant upgrade package, making it more premium and performance-oriented than ever before.

Hel of a knife

The original Aion was designed by Ostap Hel, a master knifesmith and one of the best living designers in the industry. For reference, Hel has worked with numerous noteworthy brands besides Oknife, including Bestech, Tenable, Civivi, Real Steel, Sencut and more.

Having combed through his catalog, I can tell you that the Aion is one of his more minimalist designs, which makes sense, as a gentleman’s knife. This take retains much of that original design, especially in regard to its specs and mechanisms.

The most significant upgrade to this version of the Aion is its M390 super steel drop-point blade.

The knife measures 8.19 inches in total, making it deceptively large. The drop point blade is 3.53 inches and the handle makes up the remaining 4.65 inches. It also has a flipper deployment and a classic, reliable liner lock mechanism.

The sleek handle has a slightly beveled surface, which adds a bit of character and increases its grip and ergonomics. And that drop-point blade is a perfect all-around cutting shape, ideal for a huge variety of cutting tasks. It also has jimping on the spine for a bit of extra leverage.

Gentleman’s upgrades

Tip to tail, the Aion is a great knife, especially for those who appreciate minimalism. However, this one is even better, thanks to its superior materials.

Typically, the Aion features aluminum handle scales. This edition kicks it up a notch by swapping one metal for another — specifically, titanium. This allows the knife to remain lightweight while providing a bonus to overall strength and durability. That material also extends to the deep-carry pocket clip.

However, the handle pales in comparison to the pointy end (everyone’s favorite bit, I know.) The blade gets swapped for Böhler M390 super steel — one of the hottest blade materials of the moment, alongside MagnaCut.

Those material changes significantly enhance this already outstanding blade’s performance, elevating it to the premium range. Obviously, that comes with a significant increase in its price, but that’s par for the course with a blade of this quality and style.

This knife is deceptive. Although it appears small and slender, it actually measures 8.19 inches in overall length.
