So the story goes, the original Bowie knife, designed by Rezin Bowie, was actually intended as a large, durable hunting and utility knife. However, when used by Rezin’s now-famous brother, Jim Bowie, in the legendary “Sandbar Fight,” it quickly became a popular self-defense design.

All these years later, the style is still heavily employed in fighting contexts, as can be seen in the USMC Fighting Knife. However, it is also still perfectly suited to outdoor, bushcraft and survival usage.

In fact, a brand-new modern take on the Bowie, the Prometheus Design Werx SPD STS-SFLT, makes an especially strong case for those latter purposes for numerous reasons, including its materials and remarkably low weight.

Cutting weight

Technically speaking, the SPD STS-SFLT is a full-sized knife, measuring 9.0 inches total. That said, this is on the smaller side for a Bowie knife, a style that often has a blade measuring 9.0 inches alone.

Those in the know will realize this shorter overall length is not a downside, however. Rather, it puts this knife right in the ideal range for survival and bushcraft. It’s not too big and bulky, but not so small it can’t be used for tough cutting tasks.

That potential is also furthered by its construction. The knife is made from a single, unbroken piece of MagnaCut steel. Along with being one of the trendiest super steels of the moment, this material has an especially good balance of strength, durability and corrosion-resistance, making it exceptional for outdoor use.

Despite its rock-solid construction, this blade is also crazy lightweight, clocking in at just 2.8 ounces overall. Obviously, this is largely because the handle is about as skeletonized as it gets: just a frame. However, it’s still plenty strong and tough. And it has another little bonus …

Survive? Nay. Thrive

The extremely skeletonized handle comes with a Type-95 paracord wrap. In fact, the color of the wrap is the only difference between the three SPD STS-SFLT configurations. Functionally, they’re all identical.

While that cord wrap adds much-needed grip to the knife, it also serves as one of the single best survival tools anyone can have. It can be unwrapped from the knife for use in traps, to set and secure wounds, as a means of hauling other things you might come upon (including game) and so much more.

This knife [is] right in the ideal range for survival and bushcraft — not too big and bulky, but not so small it can’t be used for tough cutting tasks.

Of course, as a fixed blade, the knife also requires a secure means of carry. And it has that, too, in the form of a Kydex sheath with a spring clip for handy securing to your belt, pack or wherever else.

Whether you need a reliable outdoor knife for your camping adventures or you want something that could help you literally survive the apocalypse, this knife fits the bill.
