So the saying goes, the best EDC knife is the one that you have on you. But what happens when you find yourself in a situation where you can’t have a regular, full-sized folding blade on you? What if you find yourself in an emergency or a situation you need to escape and your pockets are empty?

That’s where the Shomer-Tec Tomas Alas Escape Button comes in handy. It might just be the most inconspicuous folding knife ever made, and that makes it an incredibly powerful, stealthy tactical tool.

Incognito mode

This clever device was designed by Tomas Alas of Tactical Tavern, a no-nonsense YouTube channel dedicated to EDC and tactical gear. And while it certainly seems like something you might see in a James Bond flick, it’s definitely much more than just a gimmick.

That starts with its external presentation. When closed, this folding knife looks and functions exactly like any other standard 3/4-inch mil-spec plastic BDU button. It has no exterior branding that would give it away, which is essential to keeping it a sneaky secret.

As such, you can attach it to any garment just like you would any other button. Just take a bit of thread and feed it through the holes and nobody will be the wiser. Even if someone were to touch it, it feels just like a standard plastic button.

However, should you find yourself in a situation where you need some cutting power, it has an incredibly handy hidden secret that only you’ll know…

Escape plan

Hidden along the edge of the button is a tiny 0.44-inch serrated blade. Sure, that’s not a big enough edge that you’re going to want to rely on it as your go-to EDC knife, but it’s enough to make crucial cuts in an emergency situation, like bindings on your wrist.

And this isn’t just some throw-away blade, either. It’s crafted from 1905 steel, a legendary material still used on some of the toughest tactical blades to this day. In fact, 1095 is still used by Ka-Bar today for its legendary USMC Fighting Knife, as well as many of Tops Knives’ offerings and many more.

When closed, this folding knife looks and functions exactly like any other standard 3/4-inch mil-spec plastic BDU button.

To access the blade, there’s a tiny indent in the blade’s spine, kind of like a nail nick. All you have to do is draw your fingernail across the button’s edge, catch it in the indent and pull. Then, once you’re done cutting, you can fold it back once more and it’ll go right back into hiding.

The whole package weighs just 0.05 ounces, making it so light you literally won’t even notice a difference. And it’s made in the USA from USA-source components. Granted, for a button, it’s pretty expensive. But for a stealthy emergency cutting tool, it’s practically a steal.
