Knife design trends, like trends in any other category or industry, tend to ebb and flow. This year appears to be a return to the more tried-and-true classic styles, like Buck’s 110 Folding Hunter, and tactical offerings, like Ka-Bar’s smash-hit quirky fixed-blade.

However, just a few short years ago, minimalism and brutalism were all the rage. While it might not be particularly en vogue right now, you can still find some of the more daring brands continuing this tradition.

Take, for instance, We Knife’s Collinear. This exceptional EDC knife combines cyberpunk-inspired simplicity with high-end performance. And the results are, put plainly, stunning.

It’s hard not to make the obvious comparison to the Tesla Cybertruck, although it works better in knife form, in my opinion.

Cyberpunk EDC

There’s an obvious comparison to be made with the Collinear: Especially when the knife is closed, it resembles the Tesla Cybertruck. Usually, that would be a bad thing (in my opinion,) but it actually works far better in knife form than in an electric vehicle.

The knife’s angular form is sleek and simple, but still loaded with character and charm. It’s brutal, yet appealing; minimalist, but far from boring.

And while I might not recommend it for more hardcore usage — the shape isn’t particularly ergonomic and it lacks a sturdy grip — it should suffice in an everyday carry sense. Hell, if you appreciate the design enough, it might just excel.

The knife’s integrated frame lock complements the overall sleek, linear design well.

There’s also something to be said for the design’s deliberate cleanliness. Notice how there’s no visible hardware — that’s not an accident. Nor is it a mistake that the groove on the blade mirrors the line in the handle created by the integrated frame lock.

And it goes deeper than that. There’s a balance between the angle of the blade’s tip and the end of the handle. Even the pocket clip is carefully designed, with its integrated lanyard hole discreetly hidden.

None of this knife’s minimalism is accidental. For instance, the machined pocket clip was designed to hide the lanyard hole.

The right angle

I could wax poetic about this knife’s design all day, but that would be a discredit to its other components — namely, its materials. Although its appearance may be minimal, the materials, on the other hand, are maximal.

For example, the reverse tanto flipper blade is crafted from Böhler M390 super steel — an exceptional all-around blade material that’s lauded by EDC fanatics everywhere. And while the shape is seemingly simple, the long straight edge makes short work of virtually any EDC cutting task, and the piercing point is great for detail work.

The subtle, machined lines down the length of the titanium handle add some helpful grip, along with adding character.

That blade is mated to the titanium scales of the handle. While relatively simple, they do have grooves machined into their surface that add a bit of grip, while also contributing to the overall sleekness of the design.

As mentioned, the handle also supports an integrated frame lock. Furthermore, it has a ceramic ball-bearing pivot (hidden on the presentation side by the brand’s logo.) Maybe I’ve fallen prey to its charms, but this knife gets more exceptional the longer you behold it.
