Persol has probably sold thousands upon thousands of pairs of sunglasses to men trying to emulate Steve McQueen, who regularly rocked a pair of Persol 714s, even wearing them in the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair. Persol went as far as introducing a special edition pair of 714s to celebrate the association with the Hollywood icon, but nothing quite compares to the real thing, right? Well, if you want some serious McQueen memorabilia you’re in luck: a pair of 714s personally owned and worn by him is up for auction right now.
The folding, black-and-brown 714s are currently being offered by GWS Auctions and come with a letter of authenticity as well as a Persol case. Bidding has already commenced, standing at $2,600 as of writing, but will carry on until March 24th. As the lot description notes, another pair of McQueen-owned Perols went up for sale in 2006 and fetched approximately $70,000, so if you really want to acquire these in an attempt to absorb McQueen’s essence be prepared to pay handsomely.
