This week, Mr Porter released an exclusive 60-piece collection with Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli. The special project practically defines inimitable luxury menswear, showcasing high-end wardrobe staples the brand is known for including cashmere sweaters and shearling outerwear. Garments are hand-made in Italy by skilled craftsmen who use only the highest quality cashmere and leather. As such, the collection’s prices range from $345 for a pair of socks to $11,995 for a double-breasted shearling coat.
Brunello Cucinelli founded his namesake company in 1978 with a line of brightly colored cashmere sweaters, a radical departure from the natural-colored styles available at the time. He placed as much emphasis on treating his employees well and creating a positive work environment as he did on creating timeless luxury garments. Over the past few decades, Cucinelli has focused on revitalizing the town of Solomeo, where his company is headquartered. He helped restore the 12th-century Church of St. Bartholomew, repaved streets, restored squares and constructed a small theater (in a 16th-century architectural style). All of this to say: though Brunello Cucinelli products are nose-bleed expensive and the brand had a market capitalization of over €1.6 billion as of June 2017, the profits aren’t lining the coffers of a few executives and investors.
So if you see something from this collection that you can’t live without, rest assured that your investment will not only secure you one of the best pieces of menswear available, but it will also support a company that promotes human dignity — maybe that’s why GQ called Brunello a philosopher-designer.
