C.C. Filson outfitted the Klondike Gold Rush fortune seekers in 1897; though holiday travel nowadays sends us to much tamer locations, using the sloppy disheveled gym bag in the closet to avoid extra fees is the kind of boorish move that would elicit a slap in the face from Filson himself.
Filson’s updated medium duffle ($295) includes an oil-finished, rugged, waterproof cotton twill, leather straps and two-way brass zippers with leather loops. A storm flap adds looks and protection, and a leather shoulder strap bolsters ease of carry. The bag has a bit of weight due to the leather and twill, and there are only two interior end pockets — but that simplicity is refreshing, and the bag’s slight heft makes it feel as invincible as those pioneer spirits. There’s no doubt that this bag could have scaled the highest and harshest Alaskan bluffs on foot 115 years ago. So yeah. It should probably be able to make it back to Dayton.
