Low-profile, ’70s-inspired sneakers have been topping the charts in 2025 — and among them, New Balance’s newest casual lifestyle model, the 471, has stood out for its compelling combination of an approachable price and a streamlined, retro aesthetic.

The inaugural 471 launched in March of this year, drawing style cues from the 1970s running silhouettes that helped cement New Balance’s reputation decades ago.

Then, in the fall, something big happened: New Balance partnered with cult-favorite French fashion label Sézane on a limited-edition 471 — and it sold out almost immediately.

These ’70s-inspired stunners are bound to sell out quickly on their second go-round.

Turns out French styling and 1970s sneakers go together like peanut butter and jelly.

If you missed the first drop of the unisex shoe that stole our hearts this fall, you’re in for a holiday treat: New Balance is releasing another batch tomorrow, December 11, at 10 a.m. EST.

Très chic sneaks

The Sézane x New Balance 471 is a masterclass in superb styling. The shoe’s ’70s running heritage influence is clear in the low profile, wedge-shaped EVA midsole and herringbone outsole, but the French twist is where things start to get interesting.

The breathable, crochet-inspired underlays, paired with the textural suede overlays and denim “N” logo, add elevated style and set this version of the 471 apart from the pack.

The now-iconic “N” has roots tracing back to the ’70s running shoes that made New Balance a phenomenon.

(Interestingly, the “N” logo first appeared on New Balance shoes in 1975 with the original 320, which also lends the 471 its ‘Fang’ toebox overlay pattern.)

Co-branding is minimal — it lets the shoes do the talking.

The neutral colors — burnt orange, crisp linen, neutral black and deep blue — chosen for the limited-edition sneaker help balance out the tactile details while allowing Sézane’s interpretation of the style to easily move from day to night.

Availability and pricing

As I mentioned earlier, the first drop of this shoe sold out outrageously quickly — so if you like a pair, please for the love of God, sign up to be notified of their release tomorrow morning. You can find the Sézane x New Balance 471 on New Balance’s official website.
