This Surprising Brand Nailed the Perfect Three-Season Jacket for Under $300

Flint and Tinder is by far the best known, with a reputation on par with independent brands like Buck Mason and Taylor Stitch, but another name that deserves more attention is Wills.

Wills offers more elevated casual and semi-formal pieces with a mid-century lean. It provides a nice balance to Flint and Tinder’s rugged, American workwear ethos.

The new, summarily named Trench Coat perfectly exemplifies the balance compared to Flint and Tinder’s fan-favorite Waxed Trucker. Both jackets are exceptionally versatile in both form and function, but lean toward different ends of the formality spectrum.

The Trench Coat shirks the cliche that sub-$500 trench coats are dull. Wills tactfully incorporated details from outerwear icons like Barbour, Mackintosh and Gloverall to imbue this all-purpose, three-season jacket with character.

The Wills Trench Coat roughly resembles the Mackintosh Dunkeld Coat, a raincoat so iconic that it birthed the entire genre of Mac coats. The Scottish brand invented a rubberised fabric to create the first raincoat in 1824.

Based on a combination of exceptional quality, strong reputation and domestic production, Mackintosh Dunkeld Coats cost over $2,000, which makes the Wills alternative an exceptional value off the bat.

However, Wills remixed the classic Mac formula by incorporating elements like raglan sleeves, much like the kind found on Barbour’s Bedale jacket.

The Dunkeld’s simple vented pockets are replaced with large patch double pockets, each with a flap entry on top and a side handwarmer pocket beneath, just like the pockets on a Gloverall Duffle Coat.

Mackintosh’s large, removable throat latch is replaced with a smaller tab version and reinforced with a collar hook like the kind found on a Burberry Kensington trench coat.

Almost weatherproof

Alas, a $298 jacket has to cut some corners when emulating a $2,000 icon. The Wills Trench Coat is made with a double-layered 100-percent cotton fabric and constructed with bonded seams, one of Mackintosh’s innovations.

However, Mackintosh uses a modern iteration of the rubberised cotton fabric the brand invented. It is completely impermeable to water but still breathable, which is why the Scottish company makes the best raincoats in the world.

The collar has a throat latch and collar hook.

The Wills Trench Coat offers a perfectly blended cocktail of classic outerwear details while sticking to the Mac format, which is often lumped in with trench coats in America. It won’t keep you bone dry in a downpour, but it can handle just about anything else you can ask of a jacket.

At launch, it is only available in taupe. Hopefully, Wills will expand the design with more colors down the line.
