Samsung announced a new solid-state drive today and while its name, the PM1643, won’t grab the headlines, its abilities will — it’s the largest ever SSD in the 2.5-inch form factor. The PM1643 has a total storage capacity of 30.72 terabytes, which is about twice as much as storage as the same-sized SSD, the PM1633a, that it revealed back in 2016; the 30.72 terabytes is capable of storing roughly 1.2 million RAW photos, at 25 megabytes a pop. If you’re shooting video, James Vincent of The Verge wrote that it can store 500 days of continuous video — that’s 12,000 hours of footage. Additionally, the PM1643 is pretty fast. It boasts sequential read speeds of up to 2,100MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,700 MB/s.
Samsung hasn’t released much info regarding pricing and availability of the PM1643 SSD, other than it’ll be available later this year. You can expect the company to release smaller SSDs that leverage the PM1643’s small-size and high-capacity technology later this year, as well.
