Can Amazon’s FireTV Recast Keep the DVR Relevant?

This box can beam shows from your antenna to wherever.

Announced today, the Fire TV Recast is a DVR that lets you watch over-air TV from anywhere — at home on the big screen or elsewhere using your mobile device — with no monthly fees.

You can connect to your HD antenna, if you’re currently using one, but Amazon says your best bet is to connect the Recast to a Fire TV Stick or a Fire-equipped television. Once you’re connected, use Alexa to search for shows, pause playback, record, delete or schedule future recordings. Also worth noting: the device delivers the most reliable video streams over Wi-Fi of any over-the-air DVR, according to Amazon.

Will a device like this, with the support of Amazon’s smart-home ecosystem, be entirely useful in a world where on-demand streaming is outpacing broadcast TV more and more? That remains to be seen, but if you happen to enjoy traditional TV and appreciate the integration with Alexa, this might be just the thing you need.
