Why Doesn’t Every Keyboard Have This Clever Decluttering Feature?

What if, instead of cluttering up your disk with a big hub or dongle, those ports just lived in your keyboard instead?

In a world where the latest MacBooks have a suite of USB-C ports, but your gadgets still use different wires, hubs and docks are an unavoidable reality. But what if, instead of cluttering up your disk with a big black block of wires, you could fit those important ports into something that’s already taking up space? That’s the idea behind the Kolude KD-K1 Keyhub, which doubles as an impressively robust dock.

Currently a Kickstarter project that is soaring beyond its minimum goal by multiple orders of magnitude, the Kolude KD-K1 Keyhub comprises an aluminum body with scissor-switch keys, alongside an HDMI port, two ports for memory cards (SD and TF), four USB Type-A ports, and two USB Type-C ports, with one of the pair sporting Power Delivery for your fast-charging needs. Is there anything on your desk that collection of ports couldn’t handle? It could take care of everything I have, and then some.

You may not need all those ports, but it sure seems like every keyboard could benefit from having a few on-hand. Especially while they are being phased out of laptop design, where space is at more of a premium. Yes, ports will make your keyboard a little chunkier, but what’s the problem with that?

There are a few caveats to note about the Kolude. For one, it is a Kickstarter project which means there are risks involved in ponying up your money right now. There is a non-zero chance any crowdfunded project will arrive late, underwhelming, or never at all. And with that aside, the Kolude is also a scissor-switch board which, while better than Apple’s butterfly mechanism, is a far cry from the mechanical keyboard heaven I encourage every keyboard cowboy to ascend to.

If neither of those is a dealbreaker, you can get yourself on the list for a ‘board at the early bird price of just $109 while supplies last, with estimated delivery in June 2020.
