Formula One driver Ayrton Senna was a motor racing legend, one long associated with TAG Heuer. Not surprisingly, the brand has honored the champion (who died in a crash in 1994) with numerous special edition watches — and the latest are two chronographs in its Formula 1 collection. With quartz and mechanical models, both new watches feature sporty yellow accents — and a subtle nod to Senna and his record-setting speed.
There's plenty of overt Senna branding on the bezels, dials and elsewhere for hardcore fans. The ceramic bezels, however, also feature an unusual detail, with tachymeter scales that measure up to 400 km/h (most only go up to 240 km/h). Though no racing team has achieved this speed, it's meant to reference Senna's record of 340 km/h (about 211 mph). It's a cool touch for real racing history fans.
Both models will have a bold and sporty presence with the quartz model measuring 43mm wide, and the automatic model (equipped with an ETA 7750-based movement) measures 44mm. The S-link bracelet on the quartz model is another reference to the watch Senna was known to wear, and the automatic model features an embossed pattern on the strap to replicate it.
The automatic Formula 1 Senna Special Edition watch has a price of $3,200 and the quartz model is $2,100. Both are available online now directly from the brand.
