Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes some products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

In 2021, Perrelet first experimented with carbon fiber to craft its Turbine Hope watch. Until recently, the Turbine Hope was the only watch the brand had ever made with carbon fiber, but now, it’s harnessed the material once again to create the all-new Turbine Sporty Line series.

The “Turbine Rainbow” will run as the first model from this collection. Launched as a limited edition release, the full Turbine Rainbow series will be restricted to just 50 pieces. Equipped with a high-tech case – and subtly inspired by Jackson Pollock – the resulting watch is stunning and designed to evoke, “the shadows of the rainbow.”

While the Turbine Rainbow is just the tip of the Turbine Sporty Line iceberg, it’s quickly become one of Perrelet's most exciting new releases. Fans can find the piece at just a handful of authorized retailers, but we’ve compiled – and explored – all its most exciting features below.

The Backstory

Perrelet, Inventor of the Self-Winding Watch, Continues to Reinvent Itself

Founded by the inventor of the self-winding watch over 250 years ago, Perrelet continues to uphold rigorous technical standards.

In 2009, Perrelet released its first Turbine watch. Inspired by its proprietary “double rotor” movement, the new timepiece harnessed an oscillating weight on the dial side to create a propeller that rotates at extreme speeds. From there, the brand continued to iterate on this emblematic model; releasing the Turbine Chrono, Tourbillon, Turbine Pilot, Turbine Evo and more.

Now, the new Turbine Sporty Line marks an exciting move for the brand, promising versatile watches armed with the same iconic sub-dial –– and the most important features –– Turbine models have become known for. Most notably, the watches will be made with an innovative carbon fiber case to achieve improved water resistance (now up to 100m from a previous 50m) and better thermal insulation capacity. The new carbon fiber models will also be lighter weight and boast better resistance to temperature changes, making them a perfect fit for travel and rigorous activities.

The Gist

The Turbine Rainbow: Inspired Drip Built to Whip

This new watch features a self-described, “high-tech case” with a flat stainless steel bezel and caseback and a matte black PVD coating. The central body is made of polycarbonate and carbon fiber, and the watch is powered by a 25-jewel calibre P-331-MH, Perelet’s in-house automatic movement that beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour to supply a 42-hour power reserve.

Like the Turbines that came before it, Perrelet has paid special attention to the Rainbow’s sub-dial. Displayed beneath a 12-blade black anodized aluminum propeller, the multicolored sub-dial is decorated with countless small dots that create an engaging, abstract pattern. The design was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s “drip painting” technique, and each dot glows in matching-colored Super-Luminova.

Built upon a water-resistant, black calf leather, rubber-lined strap, the watch also arrives in a special “tactical box” that includes an additional rubber strap and fastening tool. All in all, this gorgeous new Turbine is designed to perform and absolutely guaranteed to impress.

Our POV

Limited to 50 Pieces, The Turbine Rainbow Will Wow in Any Collection

It lines the way for an exciting collection of new sports watches – with more Turbine Sporty Line models set to release later this year – but rightfully enjoys the spotlight for the time being.
