Verdict: Though Glashütte Original as we know it was established in 1994, its roots in the fabled German watchmaking town go back much further into the 20th century when the town’s watchers were assimilated into one company during the days of the German Democratic Republic: VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). During that time, GUB made countless three-hand watches that, while utilitarian, didn’t skimp on stylish mid-century design. Those watches are the inspiration for Glashütte Original’s Sixties lineup, and now the brand is expanding upon that style with the addition of a funky new green colorway.
See, In addition to building its watch movements in Glashütte, the brand makes its dials in its own facility in Pforzheim, Germany, which affords the brand the ability to come up with some inventive designs. This new green dial variant is a great example, featuring a sunburst fade from black to emerald varnish over a splashy, imprinted dial texture. The overall effect is bold, but that’s something we’d like to see more of in the industry.
Who It’s For: Somebody who wants a dress watch that stands out more than it blends in. The bright green dial may not be for everybody, but for those who can pull of a brash watch, it’s an excellent option.
