It’s been some time since Hodinkee announced a collaboration with another watchmaker; fortunately, their latest work probably won’t disappoint vintage watch fans. Working with TAG Heuer, Hodinkee recreated a rare reference of the Autavia called dubbed the “Orange Boy.” According to the publication, fewer than 30 Orange Boys are known to exist, and the reference wasn’t even widely known by watch enthusiasts until On the Dash came across one in 2004.
The new watch uses the bones of the modern Autavia, reissued just last year. As such, it doesn’t have the cushion case or the left-side crown like the original. So it’s not a shot-for-shot remake. But it does boast an in-house automatic chronograph from TAG Heuer and a dial with all the orange markings seen on the vintage Orange Boy. Overall, it seems to be an enticing option for anyone interested in the standard Autavia, or racing-style chronographs in general.
Unlike previous Hodinkee collaborations — which tend to sell out quickly — this piece is not a numbered limited edition, though Hodinkee notes “quantities are limited.” The watch is available for pre-order now, though, and deliveries should occur sometime between October and December of this year.
