The new Duality from California-based brand Nodus is a modern take on the Super Compressor-style of dive watches. In two versions with monochromatic black or white dials, the Duality is affordably priced at $600 and offers a unique feature in its dial construction.
The Nodus Duality combines two different approaches to dials in what the brand claims is a watchmaking first. Applied indices (as opposed to those painted on) are a common approach in the watch industry, whereas the “sandwich dial” is less so. Sandwich dials use cutouts in the dial that show through to a second layer, which is a great way to pack in luminant for a really “glowy” dial. Combining the two as Nodus has should allow for lots of “lume” as well as a three-dimensional depth effect.
As a dive watch, it’s rated to 300m with a rotating inner bezel operated via one of the crowns (there’s even luminant in the crowns). For each dial color option, you can choose a 60-minute dive-style bezel or a 12-hour one that is useful for tracking a second time zone. On a steel bracelet, the Duality is powered by a Miyota 9015 automatic movement, measures 40mm wide, and is available direct from the brand’s website.
