This Robust Modern GMT Pilot’s Watch Gets a Glowing Upgrade

Bell & Ross is brilliant at experimenting within the bounds of its tool watch roots, creating designs that are more wearable art than a timepiece. But its foundation is still highly capable tool watches.

The BR-03 GMT line is the French brand’s most pragmatic and traditional pilot’s watch. Thanks to a heavy dose of lume, it is now perfectly adapted to nighttime and low-light use.

Bell & Ross overhauled the BR-03 GMT in 2021 by adding a broader, more legible 24-hour bezel and a large rehaut with a 60-minute track. The current generation has seen several color updates and a radical compass-inspired divergence, but the new Green Lum offers the most practical enhancement by far.

The blueprint is unchanged, built in a 42mm signature rounded square stainless steel case inspired by vintage airplane instrument panels. It has a satin-brushed top with a mirror-polished, chamfered edge, topped with four exposed functional screws.

The dial plate presents a new color, featuring a smoky vertical fade that transitions from black at 12:00 to olive green at 6:00.

The handset is tweaked a bit, with the flieger-style hands flattened, the GMT hand’s rectangular tip skeletonized and an airplane silhouette added to the seconds hand tip.

All of which was done to complement the glowing new motif.

Fly by night

As the name suggests, the BR-03 GMT Green Lum is saturated in green-glowing Super-LumiNova. It covers the 3-6-9-12 hour track, all four hands and the 24-hour bezel track.

While the brand has experimented with lume in the past, this is a purely utilitarian application. The applied indices are replaced with printed ones to maximize the lume coverage, and the track on the black ceramic bezel insert is etched and then lacquered.

Bell & Ross leans into the lume theme by making the hands, dial and bezel tracks a faded lime green, which departs from the standard practice of Super-LumiNova emitting a completely different color than it appears in full light.

On the move

As with all previous BR-03 GMT references, this is a professional-grade pilot’s watch. The highly legible dial is capped with a flat, AR-coated sapphire crystal, and the stainless steel case provides 100m water resistance.

It is powered by a Caliber BR-CAL.303, a modified Sellita Caliber SW330-2 automatic movement. It beats at 4Hz, packs a 54-hour power reserve and uses a “caller” GMT complication, meaning the GMT hand is set independently.

This robust pilot’s watch comes on a black rubber pin buckle strap, and an additional black nylon Velcro strap is provided.

Availability and pricing

Excluding the compass version, the BR-03 GMT should be considered Bell & Ross’s flagship collection because it is a pilot’s watch brand at heart, and this is its best pilot’s watch. This lumed-out update is certainly the most practical version yet, and I think it’s one of the best looking.
