June 8 is World Ocean Day, and to mark the occasion, Blancpain has launched what is arguably the most advanced version yet of the original dive watch, the Fifty Fathoms.

Welcome to Reference Points: A series about the products that changed the standard — and never really stopped influencing it. Discover more here.

The first Fifty Fathoms was created in 1953 at the behest of the French Navy, and it, along with the Rolex Submariner that debuted the same year, set the template for the modern dive watch with its rotating timing bezel, luminous dial markings and high water resistance.

Now, 73 years later, Blancpain is once again pushing its iconic diver forward with the launch of the futuristic new Fifty Fathoms Tech.

Technically speaking

The first Fifty Fathoms Tech was launched in 2023 as the Tech Gombessa, the second of three special releases celebrating the 70th annviersary of the Fifty Fathoms.

That watch featured a massive 47mm case in ultra-hard-wearing Grade 23 titanium, a helium escape valve at 10:00, a central-lug design with an integrated rubber strap and, most unique of all, a new patented complication featuring a three-hour bezel and a fourth hand that makes one full revolution around the dial every three hours. The reason for this complication is that modern technical dives can last up to three hours, making the traditional 60-minute timing bezel “insufficient.”

The Tech Gombessa was undeniably cool, and a technical powerhouse, but it wasn’t the most practical dive watch in the world. So as a follow-up last year, Blancpain launched the Fifty Fathoms Tech as a more everyday-appropriate option.

It shrunk the case down to 45mm, added a date window at 4:30 and, most notably, introduced the brand’s first quick-change, push-button strap-exchange system. The watch even includes three different rubber straps to take advantage of the system right out of the box.

Now, Blancpain has launched a third iteration of the Tech that combines features of the Gombessa and the 2025 Tech to create arguably its most advanced dive watch yet.

The new Fifty Fathoms Tech brings back the larger 47mm Grade 23 titanium case with the helium escape valve, but it’s been fitted with the quick-change strap system for the first time. Water resistance is again 300m.

The watch also resurrects the Gombessa’s signature three-hour timing complication, combining it this time with a date complication. This obviously required the creation of a new movement, Calibre 13P5A, which is an automatic that beats at 4Hz and has a power reserve of 120 hours when fully wound.

The dial is the same “absolute black” that absorbs 97 percent of light, which is borrowed from the 45mm Tech, with the solid Super-LumiNova block indices are also being taken from that watch. The diving indicators, i.e., the fourth hand and bezel markings, all glow blue, while all timekeeping elements (including the minute track) glow green.

Taking advance of the strap-exchange system, the latest Fifty Fathoms Tech again includes three different rubber straps in the same colors found on the 45mm version: orange, white and black. All can be swapped out with the simple press of a button.

Availability and pricing

Although the original Fifty Fathoms Tech Gombessa was a special anniversary edition, it wasn’t limited, and is technically still available. Of the two Fifty Fathoms Tech models that launched last year, only the Ocean Commitment IV Edition is limited.

So as expected, the new Fifty Fathoms Tech is not a limited edition. Pricewise, it slots right in between the $35,000 Gombessa and the $25,200 Tech, coming in at $27,200.
