The Swatch Group is massive, even compared to other watch conglomerates. Its portfolio of 16 watch brands is the world’s largest, and many of these watchmakers are household names, including Omega, Longines and Tissot.

But with so many brands operating under the same umbrella, it’s unsurprising that some slip under the radar. One of the least known, at least in the U.S. where it has very little retail presence, is Certina.

Certina is one of the most affordable brands in the Swatch Group stable, but don’t mistake affordability for cheapness: the brand makes some of the toughest watches in the business, and it has nearly 140 years of history to fall back on.

Among Certina’s offerings, perhaps the most impressive come from the brand’s DS Action Diver line, with the brand’s latest additon to the collection making a strong case as the best dive watch under $1,000.

Goldi-Shocks

The DS Action Diver gets its name from its DS Concept case, a shock-resistant technology that Certina first introduced on its watches in 1959. The latest iteration of the protective tech, dubbed “DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance,” adds a trio of new features to the old system’s reinforced caseback and specialized seals.

The system now also features a reinforced sapphire crystal, a screwed-in movement holder, and a thin metal plate between the movement and dial that prevents the latter from slipping. According to Certina, these updates make the watches so shock-resistant that the device used to calculate their g-force resistance maxed out during testing.

Combine this new super-shock-resistant system with an agreeable Rolex Submariner-adjacent design, an impressive ETA Powermatic 80 automatic movement with an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring and 80 hours of power on tap, a robust 300m water resistance and ISO 6425 certification as a diver’s watch, and you’ve got yourself a diver that can go toe to toe with pretty much anything.

The case is about 1mm thicker than on the non-Extreme Shock Resistance 38mm model, presumably to make room for the extra shock-resistance tech.
Certina

The thing is, such a watch already exists, and has since the spring. That’s when Certina unveiled its updated DS Action Diver Powermatic 80 with the new DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance. There was just one problem with that watch. With a massive case diameter of 43mm, it was simply too large for many people to wear (present company included).

But now, Certina has updated the 38mm version of its DS Action Diver by outfitting it with the new DS Concept Extreme Shock Resistance. That means a whole lot more people can now get the benefits of Certina’s ridiculous shock resistance in a “Goldilocks” case size, while still getting all of those previously mentioned features you’ll find on the 43mm version.

In addition to the new shock resistance system, the 38mm DS Action Diver also gets a couple more welcome improvements over the older, non-Extreme version. The bezel insert has been upgraded from aluminum to ceramic, and it now boasts a symmetrical design with markings for all 60 minutes.

The three-row bracelet has also been updated and is now equipped with quick-release spring bars. The lone drawback of the update is the new case is 1mm thicker at 13.2mm, likely a result of the added protective dial plate, thicker crystal and movement securer.

Pricing and availability

Despite all of the impressive specs, the ultra-wearable size and the traditional good looks, the best part about Certina’s new DS Action Civer 38mm Powermatic 80 just might be its price. For a plain stainless steel model, which comes in classic black or with a Hulkish green dial and bezel, the watch retails for a paltry CHF 790, which currently converts to $993.

That’s a whole lot of watch you’re getting for under $1,000, and I’m not sure you can find a better diver out there for under four figures. I should point out that the watch has not yet appeared for sale in the U.S., so there’s a chance the American SRP may creep up above a grand. Regardless, this remains a great bargain for a seriously impressive and agreeable diver.

Four Certina DS Action Powermatic 80 diver's watches with 300m water resistance, featuring black dial on titanium bracelet, green dial with silver bracelet, blue and gold two-tone, and black dial with black fabric strap.
There are five new references total in the new 38mm diver line, with these four joining the classic black dial.

In addition to the plain steel models, Certina has launched a trio of more exotic versions of the new 38mm diver. There’s a blacked-out PVD version with a relief bezel on a black NATO strap for CHF 765 (~$962), and a Rolex Bluesy-inspired two-tone model with yellow gold PVD and a blue dial and bezel for CHF 845 (~$1,062).

Most impressive of all is a full titanium version on a bracelet with a black-and-gilt color scheme. That one understandably tops out the range at CHF 925 ($1,162).
