It seems the quickest path toward success for resurrected vintage watch brands is to recreate models from their mid-century heyday. It’s worked for Nivada Grenchen, Universal Genève is banking on it for its huge relaunch and Favre Leuba, which roared back to life two years ago, has also found success with the formula.

One of the most appealing models from the reborn Favre Leuba is the Deep Raider Revival. Based on the brand’s original “Deep Blue” diver from the 1960s, not only is “Deep Raider” one of the coolest watch names ever, but this also happens to be one of the most perfectly executed vintage-inspired divers on the market.

From the arrow handset and 39mm case to the fully graduated sapphire bezel, box sapphire crystal and quirky dial layout, every detail on the Deep Raider Revival feels like it time-traveled from the ’60s, getting only the appropriate materials upgrades along the way.

Now, Favre Leuba has made its vintage diver even more perfect by taking a cue from one of its legendary 1970s divers.

A Clockwork Orange

The newest incarnation of the 300m-rated Deep Raider Revival adds decidedly vibrant doses of orange lume on its dial, hands and bezel. The dark gray sapphire bezel receives luminous orange markings every five minutes, including the triangular pip and Arabic 10-minute markings, while the arrow handset is infilled with the vivid orange Super-LumiNova.

Most interesting of all are the hour markers, which feature printed batons of orange lume at all 12 markers. At the four cardinal points, however, there are applied indexes that frame elongated luminous batons that stretch toward the center of the sunburst gray dial, creating a crosshair-like effect.

Favre Leuba was inspired to use the bright orange color by the brand’s own Bathy 160, a quirky diver launched in the 1970s that featured a mechanical depth gauge and frequently had bold orange detailing. There’s no depth gauge on the Deep Raider Revival, but it’s got plenty of orange to make up for it.

The watch’s dial retains the model’s usual quirks, including a round 4:30 date window, applied logo at 10:30, and dial text at 9:00 and 3:00. The polished 39mm stainless steel case, with its straight brushed-beveled lugs and lack of crown guards, remains the same, as does the La Joux-Perret-based Calibre FLD01 automatic movement powering the watch.

The orange watch is paired with the Deep Raider Revival’s standard five-link steel bracelet, which features a mix of brushed and polished finishes and has unique triangle-topped links for a unique retro feel. This time around, however, the watch includes an additional bonus strap in bright orange fabric.

Availability and pricing

I thought the original Deep Raider Revival from 2024 was cool, but it didn’t really “wow” me. This orange version, however, is the bee’s knees. The orange highlights work so well against the anthracite dial and bezel, and they’re the perfect aesthetic match to the watch’s quirky retro design.

Favre Leuba is priced like an entry-level Swiss luxury brand, because that’s what it is. As a result, the Deep Raider Revival Orange comes in a little pricier than you might expect at $3,200. That’s a $300 premium over the non-orange version, which does not come with a second strap.
