As the legend goes, Timex invented the sports training watch — and pioneered brand collaborations — in 1984 with the release of the original Ironman watch.

By 1999, the format was perfected with the release of Ironman Flix. After faithfully reviving the design three years ago, Huckberry and Timex have brought it back with a new outdoor color scheme.

Yes, training watch capabilities have advanced substantially since the turn of the century with Bluetooth, GPS, heart rate monitoring and more. But those bells and whistles can be more distracting than helpful, especially on an Apple Watch.

The Ironman Flix has everything a committed athlete needs for pure, focused endurance training. And now, it comes in a wilderness-ready olive drab with a black bezel and hunter orange highlights.

It is lightweight and soft on the wrist, tough enough to take a beating on land and in the water and tracks an impressive amount of time-related information for a 26-year-old piece of tech.

Moreover, the retro digital watch design just looks great. Huckberry and Timex’s initial collaboration used an original black, silver and yellow color scheme. This time, the sporty look has been swapped out for a wilderness motif geared toward hiking, camping and trail running attire.

New scheme, same watch

Fans of Timex’s Ironman models from the 1980s and 1990s aren’t just lured in by nostalgia. The watches were exceptionally well designed and still hold up against modern successors.

Sticking as close as possible to the original blueprint, the new Ironman Flix has a resin case and strap that are durable and resistant to sweat, water, mud and any other substance that gets on them.

The material is also soft on the wrist and doesn’t cause chaffing. The strap’s fluted underside allows moisture to escape and prevents it from moving around too much.

If you’re like me and don’t like resin straps, no matter how well-made they are, you can swap in another 18mm wide strap like a nylon NATO or Cordura two-piece.

The black bezel is the only carryover from the previous Huckberry x Timex Ironman Flix, and the hunter orange detailing and green buttons are the only exclusive features to this model.

A Japan-exclusive version of the Ironman Flix uses a strap and case of a similar color, but it is two-tone with a black bezel.

Smart enough

There’s a benefit to the tactile engagement of a retro digital training watch. The Ironman Flix requires you to push a real button when you start a new lap or finish your routine, and that feeling is more satisfying than tapping a screen.

The Ironman Flix has the same eight features offered in 1999, including a 100-lap timing memory and a 10-entry memo pad.
Huckberry

Since its introduction in 1999, the Ironman Flix has offered the standard time, day, date, month, chronograph, countdown timer and five alarm pre-sets. On top of that, it can track up to 100 lap times by engaging the center buttons (which have braille-like bumps to differentiate them without looking), and display them by rank or chronologically.

It can also hold up to 10 memos containing a maximum of 24 characters, which is a fun but useless technological relic. However, it can stash more training information in a pinch.

The Indiglo display stays on for four seconds, and the watch is called the Flix because the backlight can be adjusted to turn on with a flick of the wrist, which is extremely helpful for running and training at night.

A perfect blend of form and function gives the Flix some separation in a crowded field of Ironman watches. It has become a cult classic among enthusiasts, and this newest Huckberry collaboration offers a refreshing appearance.

Availability and price

This new generation of the Huckberry x Timex Ironman Flix, with its exclusive olive drab and hunter orange color scheme, is available from both retailers for $129.

As with previous runs in this collaboration, supplies are limited, so I recommend scooping up one of these while you can.
