Every time I read through the specs of a Maen watch, I’m left wondering how the Swedish indie brand manages to make a profit.

There is no better example of the value Maen offers than the new Hudson 38 MK5, which is easily one of the best dive watches available for under $1,000.

Visually, the Hudson 38 MK5 is a love letter to the classic dive watches of the 1960s. It resembles a cross between a Rolex Submariner and a Seiko 62MAS, with just enough personal touch to plot its own course.

Maen’s signature baton hour and minute hands, with cropped and beveled borders, make the watch immediately recognizable to those familiar with the brand. Additionally, a 60-second ruler-style chapter ring graduated down to a quarter-second — added in 2020 with the MK3 — adds a degree of practicality.

Introduced in 2018, the Hudson line has long been a hidden gem in the dive watch market, but the new MK5 — a military designation meaning “mark 5,” or the fifth generation — comes with an impressive list of upgrades.

The 38mm brushed steel case is available with either a blue or black dial, featuring a grainy matte texture that enhances legibility through contrast and glare reduction. Both colors are available with or without a date, although this does not affect the price, as they all utilize the same movement.

Slimmed down, shined up

Starting from the outside, the MK5 reduces the case height from previous generations to just 11mm, which excludes the protrusion of another new feature: the box sapphire crystal.

The brushed steel case is slightly narrower, which reduces the convex curvature and creates the perception of elongated lugs. In response to customer requests, Maen added drilled holes to the lugs.

Arguably, the most eye-catching update is the new polished ceramic bezel insert featuring a lume dot in the pip, another addition made by popular demand.

Speaking of lume, Maen upgraded the inserts in the hands and hour markers to the exceptionally bright blue-glowing X1 Super-LumiNova, with a matching pip. The black date model also features red lume in the lollipop seconds hand and the tip of the hour hand.

The reference MK5-M1.1.5 features the same red detailing on the hands, dial, minute track and pip that has appeared on the Hudson line from the beginning. Meanwhile, the other three MK5 references skip the flourishes for a more subdued look.

The black dials have black chapter rings, and the blue dials have white chapter rings. All four references have a black ceramic bezel insert.

Powered up

Maen also tuned up the inside of the Hudson 38 MK5, outfitting it with a La Joux-Perret Caliber G100 automatic movement, which is considered a premium version of the Miyota Caliber 9015, as both manufacturers are owned by the Citizen Group.

An impressive engine for a sub-$1,000 dive watch with 300m water resistance, it beats at 4Hz and offers a respectable 68-hour power reserve.

One detail to note, although it is not explicitly stated, is that both the date and non-date references use the same movement, which typically indicates a “ghost setting” on the crown of sans-date watches.

Availability and price

One small gripe I have with this absolute steal of a dive watch is that it comes on Maen’s Lizard Pattern TPU Strap, displayed in the first image. I’m not really a fan of the faux lizard skin texture or rubber straps in general.

If you have the means, I recommend dropping the additional $184 at checkout for the three-link steel bracelet with a sliding micro-adjustable clasp, quick-release spring bars and polished edges on the center links.

The Maen Hudson 38 MK5 will be available on January 28 from Maen for $875, featuring a black rubber pin-buckle strap, and $1,059 with the additional steel bracelet.
