Timex’s Most Popular Affordable Watch Gets a Refined Chrono Update

This watch is such a stylistic departure from its Weekender siblings that it could be an entirely new model.

The Weekender is an undeniable staple of Timex’s catalog. This iconic field watch is also one of the brand’s most affordable and popular watches — thanks largely to its incredibly low entry point ($58 starting when not on sale).

It looks like the next generation of that watch is finally upon us, courtesy of the Timex Weekender New England Chronograph. This watch introduces a novel complication to the iconic timepiece and appears to have a stylistic redesign.

If it wasn’t clearly labeled as such, you probably wouldn’t know this was a Weekender.

Take your time

This new version of the classic Weekender has a couple of significant changes. The first is its chronograph functionality: this is the first Weekender chronograph with an elapsed time complication.

This complication works kind of like a stopwatch, measuring the duration between a start and stop time — as opposed to a countdown, which measures time left. While that’s the banner feature, it’s actually less significant than the other change: its design.

The New England Weekender is available in two editions, although their only difference is their strap color.

For those familiar with the Weekender, you’ll notice that this new version has a couple of major differences. For starters, the traditionally bulbous case has been swapped for a more refined, angular one. Instead of being very rounded, this one has beveled edges. It also has more of a satin finish, instead of a mirrored polish.

Furthermore, the design of the face and the chronograph layout is different from previous versions of Weekender chronographs. The sub-dials are smaller and more spaced out (which is somewhat awkward, especially when you notice how high it pushes the logo on the face).

The watch’s redesigned case is still stainless steel, measures 40 mm in diameter and is 12 mm deep.

The watch also has a larger crown with “We” (for Weekender) etched into it. Interestingly, this is also now the only Weekender chronograph available on the brand’s site — possibly a sign that this design is heralding in a new era for the staple model.

It’s likely to be divisive, as the original Weekender is such an icon. But the floogates are already open.

Despite that major redesign, there’s a lot about this watch that remains the same — likely a boon to those who already loved it. For instance, the 40-millimeter watch maintains its stainless steel case and mineral crystal.

Both versions of the watch come with “eco-friendly recycled plastic fabric” straps.

It is also still powered by a quartz analog movement, a brand staple and a hallmark of this affordable model. That case and movement combo are water resistant to 50 meters, meaning they can handle some weather but aren’t fit for diving.

Technically, the watch is offered in two different versions. However, the only difference is that one has a green fabric strap and the other has a red, white and blue one. Both versions are slip-thru straps made from recycled plastic.

While not perfect, this is a more refined reimagining of an undoubtedly iconic watch.
