Raymond Weil was one of the last significant Swiss brands without a proper integrated sports watch in its catalog. I use the past tense here because the fast-rising affordable brand has now joined the integrated ranks with its new A.R.T. Collection.

Like most integrated sports watches, the A.R.T. wasn’t cut from whole cloth. To my eye, at least, the watch’s design inspiration is quite obvious. And while most affordable integrated sports watches look to the genre’s progenitor, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, for their inspiration, Raymond Weil instead seems to have found its muse in a different 1970s Gérald Genta design:

The IWC Ingenieur.

IWC, meet A.R.T.

Raymond Weil hasn’t come out and cited IWC’s iconic sports watch as a source of inspiration for the new A.R.T., but the similarities between the two watches are pretty striking.

The case and H-link bracelet designs both appear to be nearly identical, with the main differences coming down to the A.R.T.’s lack of both crown guards and bezel screws. RW’s watch also adds Vacheron Overseas-like cutouts to the bezel in lieu of screws.

The double vision extends to the dial, where the A.R.T. has taken a simpler and softer approach to the Ingenieur’s design. Its hands and hour markers occupy almost the exact same visual space, but they come across as more rounded versions of the IWC’s more pointed hands and indices.

Greater differences are found on the rest of the dial, which is cleaner on the Raymond Weil. There’s no textured pattern like on the IWC, with the A.R.T. instead opting for a sunburst disc encircled by a slightly larger matte minute track. The date window remains at 3:00, but it lacks the fancy frame of the Ingenieur. What’s more, RW opts for less dial text, with just the brand wordmark at 12:00 and nothing at 6:00.

Sizewise, the A.R.T. goes its own way with a near-perfect 38mm x 9.95 mm case. I’d take this size over either the 40mm or 35mm Ingenieur, as it’s just so well suited to practically any wrist. The RW is water resistant to 100m, like the Ingenieur.

The A.R.T. is powered by the Sellita SW200-based Calibre RW4200. With its rather paltry 41-hour power reserve, the engine is obviously a big step down from the 120-hour Cal. 32111 manufacture movement powering the Ingenieur, but is pretty standard at this price point.

If you’re an Ingenieur fan, the A.R.T. offers a very similar style at a much smaller price point.

Availability and pricing

Look, the A.R.T. isn’t trying to compete with the Ingenieur. It’s a ~$2,000 watch, while the IWC 40mm in steel starts at $12,900.

What the A.R.T. is doing is offering a well-made Swiss automatic sports watch with a lot of the style of the Ingenieur for a fraction of the price. It’s available now in steel with a Blue, Graphite or Sage Green dial for $1,995, or in yellow gold PVD two-tone with a Blue or Graphite dial for $100 more.
