If you’re a big fan of racing culture, this may be the most exciting drop of the year from Casio’s legendary sub-brand.

When it comes to Japanese brands, especially in the watch world, there’s no denying that G-Shock is absolutely legendary. It’s such a huge name that its status as a Casio sub-brand is almost a footnote at this point.

Now, G-Shock has teamed up with another Japanese giant, albeit one in a very different industry. The G-Shock x Toyo Tires DW5600TT25-1 takes the watch brand’s most iconic offering and imbues it with some heritage motorsports styling while retaining its classic form factor and affordability.

Japanese fusion

Choosing the 5600 as the model for this collaboration is actually the perfect decision for a couple of reasons. For starters, it’s affordable at just $150, which is plenty reasonable for a watch as dependable as this one.

Second, this is an absolute icon of Japanese watchmaking. As an interpretation of the very first G-Shock model, it is deeply tied to the country’s history of craft and tech. As this collab sees two legendary Japanese brands team up, I can’t think of a more appropriate line.

Third, this model features a full-resin case and integrated stripe, which are similar in appearance and feel to rubber, the material for which Toyo Tires, as an automotive tire brand, is known. That’s furthered by the clever application of tire tread graphics on the strap.

The tire tread design on the resin strap is a nice, subtle touch that helps tie the whole thing together.

Lastly, it forces a tempered approach. This watch doesn’t work well as a platform for divisive styling. Inherently, it requires a more measured hand. Thus, the co-branding isn’t over the top.

That’s not to say that it isn’t bold; the white dial certainly offers a pop when contrasted by the black case, and the signature Toyo blue detailing, including the keeper on the strap, helps it stand apart.

And as a final, hidden detail, the watch also gets a backlight with a hidden Toyo Tires Proxes “R” logo on it that’s invisible when the backlight is off.

Burning rubber resin

Beyond the Toyo Proxes Sport R-inspired styling changes, this is still a classic 5600, and it comes with all the trappings of this classic, budget-friendly model.

As mentioned, it has a full resin and bio-based resin case and an integrated strap. It also gets the brand’s legendary shock resistance (which, I know, is a given at this point), a CR2016 battery-powered quartz movement and a bevy of onboard functions.

While the styling helps set this watch apart, it still has all the same functionality of a classic 5600.

Those functions include a stopwatch, countdown timer, multifunctional alarm, full-auto calendar, 12- and 24-hour timekeeping and more. And, impressively, the watch is rated for depths of up to 200 meters, which is somewhat unusual for such an affordable non-diver.

Chances are, this watch is going to become a collector’s piece, beloved by gearheads, Japanophiles and possibly even lovers of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. With that in mind, you’ll want to snag one while you have a chance.

Of course, this special collaboration gets its own custom packaging.
