Longines has put out a lot of bangers in recent years that strongly appeal to the enthusiast community. The new HydroConquest, the Legend Diver and other Heritage releases, the entire Spirit line.

But a huge strength of Longines, and a major reason why the brand sits firmly as one of the seven most valuable Swiss watchmakers, is the large portion of its catalog that’s aimed more at your average, non-enthusiast consumer.

For two decades, the best representation of this significant part of Longines’ business has been the Master Collection, the brand’s tribute to classic, traditional Swiss watchmaking. Dependable and good-looking without being flashy or particularly exciting, the Master Collection has always sold well and is a big reason why the brand is as big as it is.

Now, Longines is finally giving the Master Collection some enthusiast-approved attention with a massive overhaul to the entire line that makes it more desirable to casuals and diehards alike.

Master of its domain

The new Master Collection drop is quite expansive, with four total sizes in 30mm, 34mm, 39mm and 41mm. The two former are considered ladies’ models, and the latter two, which I’ll mainly be focusing on, are targeted toward men.

Most of the same common updates can be found across the 39mm and 41mm sizes. The dials feature a new version of their classic barleycorn pattern that has become a Master Collection signature (and which looks fantastic in person), while the rest of the dial has been further elevated.

The Arabic numeral indices are now applied rather than printed, providing more depth. They’re paired with an elegant new leaf-shaped handset, and both hands and indices have received flashier finishing. They’re rhodium-plated on the blue-dial references, and heat-blued steel on the silver dials.

The watches’ stainless steel cases have been completely redesigned to be sleeker and more contemporary. They’re mostly polished with a mirror-polished concave bezel acting as their defining feature. They’re also very thin, with the 39mm version clocking in at a minuscule 9.05mm and the 41mm measuring just 9.5mm tall.

The movement inside is new as well, and it powers the 34mm, 39mm and 41mm. It’s essentially a Longines manufacture movement, as it’s made by sister brand ETA exclusively for Longines in the brand’s dedicated wing of the ETA manufacture.

The Cal. L888.5 movement is exclusive to Longines and features all the bells and whistles we’ve come to expect from the brand.

Dubbed the Calibre L888.5, the movement basically everything you’d want from a modern automatic in this price range, with an amagnetic silicon balance spring, a full three-day power reserve and a date complication at 3:00. The movement is visible through a sapphire display caseback on all models and features Longines’ typical level of decoration, which is to say they look nice.

Also new (shocker) are the bracelet and strap options. All references come on your choice of a leather strap or an all-new stainless steel bracelet. The three-row bracelet features a mix of brushing and polishing and is surprisingly sporty. It’s secured via a triple-folding butterfly clasp that incorporates a hidden microadjustment feature that can be adjusted while on the wrist.

The leather strap only comes in dark blue on the 39mm and 41mm models and is made of alligator leather. It’s fitted with a stainless steel push-button deployant clasp that also incorporates a toolless microadjustment mechanism. Longines has increasingly been adding this microadjustment system to its clasps, and it’s fantastic to see it again here.

With the elevated design, wearable sizes, improved movement and practical bracelet/strap options, the new Master Collection looks like an absolutely killer everyday watch. But there is one issue that prevents it from filling that niche.

The water resistance is just 30m, effectively relegating these watches to “hand washing and that’s it” status when it comes to getting them wet. As such, I’d consider these to be dress watches rather than “go anywhere, do anything” watches. But don’t worry. If it’s a “GADA” watch you’re after, then Longines still has the Conquest.

At 30m water resistance, I’d classify the new Master Collection as a dress watch.

Availability and pricing

Both the 39mm and 41mm versions are available with silver or blue dials on blue alligator straps or steel bracelets, and all are very similarly priced.

The 39mm silver dial is available on a blue alligator leather strap (L2.949.4.73.2) or steel bracelet (L2.949.4.73.6), or with a blue dial on the same strap (L2.949.4.93.2) and bracelet (L2.949.4.93.6). All are priced the same at $2,650.

The story for the 41mm version is similar. It comes with the silver dial on the blue alligator strap (L2.950.4.73.2) or steel bracelet (L2.950.4.73.6), or with a blue dial on the same strap (L2.950.4.93.2) and bracelet (L2.950.4.93.6). Additionally, the 41mm silver dial is also available with Eastern Arabic numerals in place of standard on a strap (L2.950.4.79.2) or bracelet (L2.950.4.79.6). All six larger references cost $2,750.
