Last year, Acoustic Energy introduced a reimagined version of its original 1987-released bookshelf speaker, the AE1, to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary.

The AE1 (40th Anniversary Edition) stayed faithful to the original’s design, but featured updated drivers and a more luxurious cabinet.

Now, the famed British hi-fi brand is giving the same treatment to its AE2 standmount speakers, which it calls the “big brother” to the AE1.

The Legend’s Big Brother

The Acoustic Energy AE2 is a two-way, triple reflex-ported standmount loudspeaker featuring three drivers: two woofers and a tweeter. It was originally released in 1988 and then ultimately discontinued in the early 2000s.

Over the years, the company has made several different models. The all-new AE2 (40th Anniversary Edition), or the AE2-40, takes after the flagship AE2 Signature edition, which was introduced in 1994.

These special-edition loudspeakers have been updated with the same “technological refinements” introduced with the 40th Anniversary versions of the AE1.

According to the brand, it uses the same newly developed woofer and tweeter drive units. (The difference being the AE2 has two woofers instead of the AE1’s one.)

Compared to the AE1-40, the AE2-40 has a larger cabinet and adds a second woofer.

“A music lover’s speaker”

Acoustic Energy claims it designed the AE2-40 to match the “tonal characteristics and punchy dynamics” of the smaller AE1-40, but also pack more bass and power so that it fills larger rooms.

According to the brand, the AE2 40th Anniversary “offers the scale and authority of a small floor-standing loudspeaker with the very low cabinet coloration, 3D imaging and ease of placement of a stand-mount speaker.”

The speakers come in two finishes: high gloss black paint or walnut wood veneer.

Acoustic Energy claims that the AE2 40th Anniversary is aimed at the purist audiophile. It delivers “a ‘live’ fast sound, forgoing technical niceties and paper specifications to drill down to the heart of the music.”

The company calls it “a music lovers’ speaker, first and foremost.”

Availability and pricing

Acoustic Energy debuted the AE2 40th Anniversary this week at North West Audio Show 2026, an annual hi-fi trade show that takes place in England. The company claims it’s only producing “a highly exclusive, limited quantity” of them.

The new speakers are expected to be available by the end of the year. A pair will cost €2,799/pair (roughly $3,200), making them over twice as expensive as the AE1 40th Anniversary models. US pricing and availability have not yet been revealed.
