Focal is a luxury hi-fi manufacturer that specializes in some pretty insane loudspeaker systems.

For example, just a few weeks ago, the company introduced the Diva Alta Utopia, an absolute behemoth of a wireless active speaker system that it claims “redefines what you can expect from an all-in-one hi-fi speaker.” It costs $210,000.

This week, Focal is turning its attention to passive loudspeakers with the introduction of the successor to its Scala Utopia Evo, the most entry-level floorstanding loudspeaker in its flagship Utopia series. The company currently sells a pair for roughly $40,000.

The new models, the Scala Utopia Evo M, go for well north of that.

Focal’s Scala Utopia Evo M are obviously some pretty insane audiophile loudspeakers, even if they are technically the most entry-level models in the brand’s flagship Utopia series. (For context, the flagship Grande Utopia EM Evo floorstanding speakers cost roughly $300,000/pair.)

The Scala Utopia Evo M loudspeakers retain the same 3-way architecture of their predecessors, as well as the sculpturesque design and wooden cabinet made by the brand’s cabinetmakers in Burgundy.

Two driver innovations

However, Focal claims it has upgraded these newest loudspeakers with two key innovations that “take its iconic speakers to the next level.”

First, the Scala Utopia Evo M adopts the M-profile midrange from the company’s Utopia Main professional studio monitor range, which can range from $30,000 to $50,000.

This midrange driver combines a W cone with sandwich structure and a one-piece M-profile geometry. “This combination guarantees exceptional rigidity, ultra-linear frequency response and very low distortion,” claims Focal. “The midrange register is significantly more transparent, precise and natural.”

At $50,000/pair (or more), the Scala Utopia Evo M are passive loudspeakers designed to be the focal points of a serious hi-fi system.

Trickle-down tweeter

Secondly, Focal has upgraded the Scala Utopia Evo M with the same Prism tweeter that it just introduced in its $210,000 Diva Alta Utopia active speaker system.

This tweeter offers “greater rigidity than beryllium, while maintaining an optimal balance between lightness and damping,” according to the brand. “Coupled with Infinite Acoustic Loading (IAL2) technology, it delivers treble reproduction of unprecedented purity, finesse and extension.”

Additionally, Focal claims it also completely redesigned the Scala Utopia Evo M’s woofer to deliver “powerful, deep, controlled bass, in tune with today’s musical demands.”

Focal recommends pairing its newest loudspeakers with Naim (its sister company) amplification.

Focal is the sister brand to Naim, the British hi-fi company best known for its beautiful streamers and amplifiers, and naturally, it recommends pairing its newest loudspeakers with Naim’s counterparts.

Focals claims that the Scala Utopia Evo M are designed to work best with Naim’s 200 and 300 Series of hi-fi separates “for optimum richness.” For an all-in-one solution, it recommends pairing them with Naim’s Uniti Nova PE streaming amplifier, which costs $10,000.

Availability and pricing

The Focal Scala Utopia Evo M will be available beginning August 2026 in three high-gloss finishes (black, off-white and warm taupe) and two finishes with walnut veneers (light walnut and dark walnut).

The loudspeakers with a high-gloss finish will cost $50,000, while the walnut models (with off-white or sepia-brown front panels) cost $56,000.
