When it comes to luxury dive watches, Panerai’s offerings have always stood out from the crowd.

The brand’s signature Luminor is no ordinary dive watch. It’s an oversized shaped watch with a unique crown protection system, and it lacks a traditional dive-time bezel. In 1998, Panerai launched the Submersible, complete with a rotating bezel, as its take on a more traditional diver.

The Submersible has still always felt more like an anomaly than a true competitor to luxury divers from Rolex, Omega and others. But that changes now, as Panerai has just launched its most traditional dive watch yet with its latest Submersible.

Brace yourself

The big change on the new Submersible, Reference PAM01756, is the addition of a stainless steel bracelet. Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Panerai bracelet before. In fact, you can get this same bracelet on the 44mm Luminor Marina. But it is the first time a 44mm Submersible has been equipped with any bracelet, period.

The bracelet’s unique link design was inspired by Panerai’s signature crown guard, creating a cohesive aesthetic. The bracelet’s clasp is also equipped with the brand’s Quick Length Adjustment feature, which offers 2mm of travel on each side for adjustments on the go without requiring any tools. It’s the first time this feature has appeared on any Submersible.

The bracelet isn’t the only traditional luxury dive watch feature found on the PAM01756. In fact, Panerai made this thing about as close to a Submariner or Seamaster as the brand has ever gotten. The dial is black with applied indices and skeletonized hands all filled with white Super-LumiNova. The date has been deleted to prioritize legibility, while the dial retains Panerai’s trademark 9:00 small seconds indicator.

Matching nicely with the black dial is a blue ceramic bezel insert, with its black-and-blue combination recalling the classic Rolex Submariner “Cookie Monster” and the new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean in the same colorway.

In addition to the bracelet, the watch boasts a largely traditional dive watch design.

The water resistance remains a robust 500m, the same as other 44mm Submersibles, and Panerai actually tests the watch at 625m just to be safe. The movement powering the watch is also unchanged: It’s the in-house Calibre P.980 automatic, which has a weekend-proof three-day power reserve.

Availability and pricing

With its clean dial, classic color combination and, most notably, its steel bracelet complete with a microadjustable clasp, the new Sumbersible PAM01756 is the closest Panerai has ever come to creating a classic luxury dive watch.

It’s still unmistakably Panerai with its oversized cushion case, patented crown-protecting device and small seconds counter, but if you’ve been waiting for a Panerai that felt a bit more like other divers, this is the one to get.

The PAM01756 is available now from Panerai for $13,200.
