When you just want to get out on the trails, anything that slows you down can feel like an annoyance, even tying your shoes. But what if you didn’t have to? Better still, what if you didn’t have to sacrifice performance or risk injury in the process?

That’s the promise of Kizik’s latest offering, the Freedom Trail. This trail-running sneaker was built to perform and simultaneously eliminates one of the most frustrating parts of getting out there.

At a glance, you wouldn’t even know the groundbreaking innovation hidden in this shoe.

Hit the trails, hands-free

Kizik has built its brand on integrating HandsFree Lab tech, which allows users to step into and out of their footwear without bending over or sitting down. I actually own a pair of their insulated winter boots, and they’ve been a lifesaver on cold winter mornings.

But the Freedom Trail (and its predecessor, the Freedom Run) is a bit different. With casual shoes, their snugness isn’t as crucial. However, a loose sneaker on a run can spell disaster.

The Freedom Trail’s heel hides HandsFree Labs tech, which lets you step into them securely without bending down to tie them.

Kizik has considered this, developing the shoe specifically to maintain its snug fit even when slipping it on and off. That includes the addition of a tented heel pocket with a padded collar for additional security.

Not only is the collapsible heel, the crux of the hands-free system, sleeker and more integrated than its other shoes, but it also works in tandem with its other elements.

For instance, it has a bungee eyelet system, which allows for flex when putting the shoes on, but maintains snugness once you’re in. It also has a mono-mesh upper to maintain its structure across all uses.

Beyond its handy, convenient heel tech, this is a highly capable trail shoe with a terrain-conquering rocker outsole.

More than a novelty

Beyond that extremely convenient innovation, these shoes also have plenty going for them to make them serious contenders on the trails. Alongside the mono-mesh, the upper also has reinforced, no-sew overlays to add durability where you need it without increasing the bulk.

Below that, they come with a responsive VivaFoam midsole that is also durable but, more importantly, offers both plenty of cushion and energy return. Of course, the most crucial element is down below.

The Freedom Trail has a rocker outsole, ensuring a smooth stride on any terrain. And speaking of terrain, the outsole features dual-directional lugs to tackle any surface you might encounter outdoors (and at any speed).

And if you’re worried about what’s gonna happen after you take them off, fret not. They also have antimicrobial and anti-odor tech built into the insole.

These might genuinely be the most convenient trail-running sneakers ever made. And that means more time on the trails and less time bending over and stressing over your laces.
