America’s Old-School Muscle SUV Just Reaffirmed Its Dark-Horse Status

As gas prices have soared here in the United States, it’s only become increasingly tempting to downsize or (if you can still find a good secondhand deal) ditch internal combustion altogether.

Consequently, there’s one SUV that’s proving to be a true dark horse in the running this year. Between its comparatively analog interior and its brutish V8 powertrain, it’s the very antithesis of what you might expect to land.

Nevertheless, in spite (or, rather, because) of these qualities, this old-school American vehicle has just proven its standout three-row status once again.

A rocketing R/T 392 launch

I’m talking about the Dodge Durango. Even having recently achieved its highest Q2 retail sales volume since 2021 and its best first-half total since 2006, the SUV still has more to boast about.

That’s because, according to CEO Matt McAlear, “Dealer orders for the 2026 Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition sold out in just six hours.”

Mind you, that’s not without good reason. The announcement of the R/T 392 effectively dropped the price of entry for the 495-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi by over $20,000. Buyers previously had to pony up some $75k for the SRT, but the new 392-cube R/T starts at $49,995 before delivery.

What’s more, Dodge sprinkled in some choice upgrades to sweeten the deal for Launch Edition models. Along with standard adaptive performance suspension, the special Durango benefited from beefier six-piston Brembos up front, an electronically-controlled limited-slip rear diff and an upgraded exhaust.

To call it a tempting vehicle to have on the lot would be an understatement.

Carrying Durango momentum

Still, at this point, these performances aren’t exceptions. They’re part of an ongoing turnaround. Even before the breakout start to 2026, the Durango was putting up strong numbers.

Just last year, the SUV posted its best sales year since 2005, improving by some 37 percent compared to 2024. As if that wasn’t enough, the figure amounted to 80 percent of the Dodge brand’s overall volume.

Now, while there’s no denying that aggressive pricing, discounts and incentives have given the Durango some compelling value compared to rivals, it’s still a pretty remarkable feat.

After all, the third-generation Dodge Durango is 15 years old at this point, largely the same in spirit but periodically refreshed with facelifts and technology updates. In many ways, it’s a true throwback.

Much as that might make it seem antiquated, though, it’s clearly continuing to give the SUV a unique appeal amongst a sea of hybrids and EVs. Between the simplicity, the muscle car spirit and family-friendly utility it’s a refreshing break from the status quo.

Availability and pricing

Dodge’s Durango 392 R/T Launch Edition starts at $49,995. However, you can actually get your hands on V8 performance for even less with the GT AWD Hemi. It starts at some $43,675.
