Virtually no other work boot comes close to how iconic Red Wing’s Classic Moc is. It’s not just a best-seller for the brand; it’s among the most beloved and respected boots of all time, period.

Yet, even for such a monolithic offering, the brand’s latest is something special. In fact, the brand itself calls the Red Wing Heritage 6-Inch Classic Moc in Tidal Muleskinner “once-in-a-generation.”

Deep blue something

Let’s start by addressing the big, blue elephant in the room: the eye-catching upper. While the styling looks very different from the majority of Red Wing’s classic color palette, it is still anchored to the brand’s traditional approach.

The upper is crafted from a roughout muleskinner leather the brand calls “once-in-a-generation.”

That color, by the way, is called Tidal, and follows a painstaking dying process to achieve such deep saturation and tone. There really isn’t anything else quite like it in the brand’s catalog, as confirmed by Red Wing itself.

However, the color isn’t the only thing special about the upper. The material is also a highlight. This version of the Classic Moc utilizes Red Wing’s Muleskinner leather, a rugged, roughout leather with an almost velvety texture to it.

The boot also comes with two different kinds of laces: tough, synthetic cable laces and leather laces, so you can mix and match depending on the styling you’re going for. Yet, for all its styling, there’s plenty of performance to be had.

Handsome, but hard-working, too

Many of the other highlights of this special-edition take on the Classic Moc can’t be seen with the naked eye.

While it is built on Red Wing’s classic No. 23 last, it gets a more modern blacked-out Traction Tred outsole, which is made from lightweight blown rubber and provides comfort and stability, especially on flatter terrain (it is a work boot, not a hiker, after all).

It also features Puritan triple stitching for long-lasting durability. And it has an additional storm welt that offers even better water resistance and gives the boot a bit more chunkiness, lending to its overall rugged vibe.

Keep in mind: these are a limited edition release. They will not be added to the brand’s permanent collection. That makes them a hot commodity, and they’ll likely be hard to get your hands on (or feet in).

Unfortunately, these boots are limited-edition, so they won’t be a part of the brand’s permanent catalog.
