Timex Finally Gave This Cult Retro Watch the Update It Deserves

For the price, the 1995 Intrepid was a lot of watch. Maybe even too much.

On paper, the Timex Intrepid had it all.

Released in 1995, the watch came with a highly legible case (backed by innovative Indiglo technology), slide-rule bezel for nautical distance calculations and affordable price tag, not to mention some celebrity clout.

One reportedly made its way into the collection of esteemed sailing enthusiast John F. Kennedy Jr.

That’s a lot of watch, especially by today’s standards. Perhaps even too much. Both the original, as well as a recent reissue, clocked in at a unapologetically bold 46mm, side to side.

In other words, the Intrepid was awesome on paper … but not on every wrist.

One size fits all

Now, thanks to a collaboration between Timex, Foundwell and the female-forward watch platform Dimepiece, the Intrepid shrinks down to a highly wearable 36mm, welcoming all wrists to the ’90s-themed party.

While the new size is certainly the most pronounced alteration, it’s not the only one.

The dial of the Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition swaps out bright white for vintage cream, with the teal Indiglo pusher at 9 o’clock making way for one colored bright purple.

There’s also a cobranded caseback, featuring both the Timex and Dimepiece logos.

Like the original Intrepid, however, the new watch features 100 meters of water resistance, synthetic rubber strap and quartz movement.

One of the watch’s quirkiest features, a crown at 4 o’clock, remains.

It also preserves one of its quirkiest attributes: a uniquely placed crown, found at 4 o’clock.

The Timex Intrepid x Dimepiece Edition costs $239 and is available for purchase from Timex, Dimepiece, Todd Snyder and End. Clothing.

Three decades after its release, the Intrepid shrinks to 36mm — a 10mm difference to the original case size — courtesy of a collaboration with the female-focused watch platform Dimepiece. The watch also receives a new cream dial, purple accents and a cobranded caseback.
