Ooni Just Fixed the Biggest Issue with Its Most Advanced Pizza Oven

The brand’s next electric pizza oven is smaller, cheaper and just as powerful as its predecessor. What’s not to like?

It’s somewhat ironic that most cooks see homemade pizza as an alternative to grilled meats and vegetables.

In the age of the standalone oven, pizza is something you make outdoors when you’ve got time on your hands and weather on your side — even if most professionally made pies are in fact indoors.

Though this wasn’t its intention, Ooni’s first stab at an electric oven, the Volt 12, showed just why that’s the case.

Ooni first tried to bring the pizza-making indoors with the Volt 12 — a large, expensive electric oven that was a big as it was impressive.

Big flavor, big footprint

Released in 2023, the Volt 12 arrived as an ultra-capable solution for cooks who either crave pizza year-round or live in apartments without access to a patio.

It could reach 850 degrees, thanks to two independently controllable heating units, and cook pizza in seconds. It also costs $1,000 — making it Ooni’s most advanced and expensive oven to date.

But that sky-high price tag wasn’t its issue.

As we wrote in our review, the original Volt 12 was absolutely massive, taking up 21 inches of counter space. And the fact that it weighed close to 40 pounds meant it wasn’t easily movable to a garage or storage cabinet.

In other words, a dedicated pizza oven needs dedicated space, and a lot of it. Which is why — once you look past the obvious ventilation needs that come with gas and live fire — most enthusiasts see pizza as a seasonal outdoor hobby similar to grilling, myself included.

The new, improved and much smaller Volt 2 might have just changed that.

Smaller, cheaper, more useful

On sale October 1, the follow-up to the Volt 12 comes with a 30 percent reduction in its counter space footprint, while being capable of cooking pizzas up to 13 inches wide.

What’s more, it can still reach temperatures up to 850 degrees, with a dedicated broiler mode for searing.

In the background, there is a white wall with a floating shelf holding two ceramic bottles, a small stack of bowls, and a hanging plant with purple and green leaves. On the left side of the countertop, several wooden cutting boards are leaning against the wall.
Despite that reduction in size, it can still cook pies up to 13 inches wide.

However, its range (which bottoms out at 70 degrees for proofing purposes) makes it a versatile machine that can work as a second oven for all manner of dishes.

The Volt 12 also debuts a patent-pending AI system that Ooni calls “Pizza Intelligence,” which automatically adjusts power and heat distribution in real time to help novices avoid overcooking their pizzas.

The Volt 2 isn’t just for pizza. It can replace a countertop oven and function as a powerful side broiler.

I will reserve judgement on the potential of the technology until I actually go hands on with the Volt 2.

That said, the compact form factor alone makes it not only a worthy successor to the Volt 12 but a potential disruptor for the category at large.

The Volt 2 also comes with a new AI feature called “Pizza Intelligence,” which adjust the power as needed.

Availability and pricing

While the price of the original Volt wasn’t its main flaw, it was still an obstacle for cooks on the fence about investing in a dedicated pizza oven. Fortunately, the Volt 2 skips right around it with a significantly cheaper MSRP.

When it goes on sale next month, it will cost $699 — putting it more in-line with the rest of Ooni’s pizza ovens. It will be available for purchase on Ooni’s website starting October 1.
