Did Two Popular Hi-Fi Brands Just Make the Ultimate Sonos-Rivaling Speaker System?

The Scandinavian hi-fi brand’s line of wireless speakers is powered by one of the biggest names in multi-room audio.

If you have an ear to the ground regarding today’s hi-fi scene, you’ve undoubtedly heard of WiiM.

The California-based audio company makes wireless streamers and streaming amplifiers — and, more recently, wireless speakers and subwoofers — that can stream high-resolution audio and work in a multi-room audio system. They’re essentially a more affordable alternative to Sonos.

Audio Pro is another prominent audio brand. The 40-year-old Swedish audio manufacturer is well known for its relatively small powered speakers and wireless multi-room speakers. And now it’s making some big moves.

That’s because Audio Pro has teamed up with WiiM to create a new generation of wireless speakers that are powered by WiiM’s app. And there are a lot of different speaker options to choose from.

WiiM-powered

Audio Pro’s new “W-generation” of wireless speakers includes ten different speaker options, ranging from the small tabletop speakers (A10 MkII W) to large active floorstanding speakers (A48 W).

If these speakers look familiar, there’s a reason: Audio Pro has been making them for some time. However, each W-generation model — which has a “W” designation — has been upgraded with improved acoustics and support for WiiM’s streaming app.

In a nutshell, Audio Pro has totally changed the experience of using its wireless speakers. WiiM’s app is known for its fast, intuitive interface, so these new W-generation speakers can take advantage of that.

Perhaps more importantly, the app offers advanced settings for customizing EQ, room tuning and enhanced multi-room and grouping capabilities.

Additionally, the app expands the streaming support for each speaker, including support for Spotify, Tidal, Amazon Music, Qobuz, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Napter and TuneIn.

“You’re not just getting new features,” said Nils Ankarcrona, Audio Pro’s CEO, in the press release. “You’re getting a new, streamlined listening experience.”

Two black rectangular speakers are shown, one with a visible woofer and tweeter, and the other with a black fabric grille covering the front. A slim, silver remote control with black buttons is leaning against the speaker with the grille. The speakers have a modern, minimalist design with smooth surfaces and sharp edges.

If you already own one of Audio Pro’s wireless speakers, they unfortunately can’t be upgraded to work with WiiM’s streaming app.

However, the W-generation speakers are backward compatible, meaning they’ll work with Audio Pro’s previous app, and you’ll still be able to group the new and old speakers together.

10 speaker models

Audio Pro’s W-generation range includes ten different wireless speakers.

There are two tabletop speakers, the A15 W and the battery-powered A10 MkII W, which are sort of rivals to Sonos’s Era 100 and Move 2, respectively.

There are three sets of active bookshelf and floorstanding speakers, including the A28 W (bookshelf), the A38 W (floorstanding) and the A48 W (floorstanding).

There are three different one-box stereo speakers, including the C5 MkII W, the C10 MkII W and the C20 W (in order from smallest to largest). And there are two other larger wireless speakers, the Drumfire D-2 W and Drumfire W.

Two tall, white floor-standing speakers are shown. The speaker on the left has a light gray fabric grille covering the front, while the speaker on the right has the grille removed, revealing two black mid/bass drivers and one smaller black tweeter at the top. Both speakers have a square base for stability.

Lastly, Audio Pro’s W-generation of wireless speakers looks a bit different than its predecessors. The new range has harmonized colors, fabrics and logo placement across all the models.

According to the brand, the new aesthetic creates a “cohesive, premium look that balances Scandinavian minimalism with tactile richness.”
