It’s now one step closer to the real deal.

Back in 1994, Tissot launched the Ballade. Conceived as a unisex “day to night” watch, the original quartz-powered Ballade featured a two-tone design with a multi-link bracelet, a knurled bezel and applied indices. It was very, very ’90s-looking.

Fast-forward to last year, when Tissot resurrected the Ballade for the model’s 30th anniversary with far more attractive and contemporary styling. The new version boasts applied hour markers, a Jubilee-style bracelet, a fluted bezel, lumed baton hands, a framed 3:00 date window and a radial-textured sunburst dial. In other words, it now looks quite a bit like a Rolex Datejust.

The background features an elegant, warmly lit interior with tall columns and arched windows. The bottom of the image shows the Tissot logo and the tagline "Swiss Quality Time.

Priced from $375 to $475, the new Ballade makes for a nice, affordable option for anyone who likes the look of a Datejust, but with a quartz movement inside, the watch was never going to mimic much that a Rolex offers outside of its appearance. But that’s changed as of today, as Tissot has now released the Ballade with a COSC-certified automatic movement, bringing it closer in line with its aesthetic inspiration.

Officially certified

Rolex’s watches are famously “officially certified superlative chronometers,” which is a two-step process. The first step involves Rolex sending its watches out to Contrôle officiel suisse des Chronomètres (AKA COSC) in Switzerland, which is the nation’s official chronometer-certifying body.

After Rolex watches receive COSC certification, the brand then puts them through additional testing in-house to ensure they meet its more rigorous “superlative chronometer” qualifications, which say the watch must be accurate to within +/- 2 seconds per day, a boost over COSC’s -4/+6 seconds per day criterion.

Two Tissot wristwatches with stainless steel bracelets are shown against a red gradient background. The larger watch has a silver dial with Roman numeral hour markers, a date window at 3 o'clock, and "TISSOT 1853" and "POWERMATIC 80 CHRONOMETER" text. The smaller watch features a light blue dial with Roman numeral hour markers and a date window at 3 o'clock. Both watches have fluted bezels and luminous hands.

Tissot’s new automatic Ballade obviously hasn’t undergone any testing from Rolex to qualify as a superlative chronometer, but the watch has been put through the ringer at COSC, meaning you’re guaranteed chronometer-grade accuracy out of the box.

What’s more, the movement receiving COSC certification is the renowned Powermatic 80, which boasts a class-leading 80-hour power reserve and is equipped with an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring.

The watch is labeled "Certified Chronometer," "Water Resistant 10 bar (100m/330ft)," and features the Tissot logo with the year "1853" engraved on the rotor. The background is a gradient of dark to bright red.

Outside of the movement, there are a few more differences between the new Ballade COSC and last year’s quartz-powered version. For one, the case is 1mm smaller, coming in at the sweet spot size of 39mm. Also, the applied indices are now Roman numerals instead of plain sticks, recalling some of the more formal Datejust models.

Speaking of the Datejust, the new Tissot obviously isn’t approaching Rolex levels of quality, but it will give you some of the same specs, including a sapphire crystal and 100m of water resistance. You’ll even get a couple of cool features you won’t find on a Datejust, like a quick-release bracelet and a sapphire display caseback. Plus, there’s also no cyclops magnifier covering the date window, which is a win in my book.

The left watch features a silver stainless steel bracelet and case with a dark blue dial, white Roman numeral hour markers, and a date window at 3 o'clock. The right watch has a two-tone silver and gold stainless steel bracelet and case, a white dial with gold Roman numeral hour markers, and a date window at 3 o'clock. Both watches have fluted bezels and three hands including a second hand.

Pricing and availability

At launch, there are four references of the Tissot Ballade COSC. Three are in plain 316L stainless steel with your choice of a silver, blue or — my pick — green dial. They each retail for $1,100.

Topping the range is a two-tone version, which most resembles both classic Datejusts and the original Ballade from the ’90s. It features yellow gold PVD coating on its bezel and on the polished center links of the bracelet and has a silver dial with gold-tone hands, indices and date window frame. It’s priced slightly higher at $1,225 on account of the gold PVD containing actual gold.

The watch has a fluted bezel and a silver metal link bracelet. The dial includes the text "TISSOT 1853," "POWERMATIC 80 CHRONOMETER," and "SWISS MADE.Tissot
