Don’t worry, the Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie still has a 10-year guarantee.

A few months back, I noticed that Flint and Tinder’s 10-Year Pullover Hoodie was almost completely sold out.

At first, I thought the brand was abandoning one of its best products. But as it turns out, it was just making room for a new and improved version.

After nearly a decade of service, Flint and Tinder revised the 10-Year Hoodie based on customer feedback.

Flint and Tinder, Huckberry’s marquee in-house apparel brand, launched the 10-Year Sweatshirt line in 2016. Along with the pull-over hoodie, it includes a crewneck sweatshirt and a full-zip hoodie.

The hoodie is based on Champion’s century-old design, which features a center-stitched hood with a drawstring, a kangaroo pocket, ribbed side panels and elastic cuffs and waist.

It quickly grew a cult following, often appearing on Best-Of lists alongside the likes of American Giant, Reigning Champ, Knickerbocker and House of Blanks.

It had a few things going for it, like being made in the USA, a flattering fit and a large assortment of colors. But what really set the 10-Year Hoodie apart was the guarantee in its name.

Since its launch, Flint and Tinder has guaranteed the hoodie for a full decade of use.

The times, they are a changin’

The menswear landscape has changed a lot over the past decade. Even though hoodies are more popular than ever, the generally preferred features have shifted.

Flint and Tinder’s design team wisely responded to that shift by collecting customer feedback and redesigning one of its most popular products to give the people what they want.

The most obvious adjustment is that the fit is boxier in the shoulders and wider in the torso, shifting from a raglan sleeve to a standard sleeve. According to a brand representative, this was the most requested update by far.

The other significant change that conforms to modern tastes is a burlier fabric. Guys want heavier-weight tees and sweatshirts these days, so the 10-Year Pullover Hoodie 2.0 bulked up from a 12-ounce fleece to a 13.5-ounce fleece.

However, the fabric blend remains unchanged at 70 percent cotton and 30 percent polyester. This is close to the industry standard because it balances warmth and durability with drying speed and flexibility.

There is an adjustment to the fabric blend used for the ribbed side panels. Since the fit is looser, the panels require less give, so the proportion of spandex has dropped from 5 percent to 2 percent.

A decade of service, guaranteed

Crucially, Flint and Tinder retained the most important feature of the 10-Year Pullover Hoodie 2.0: the 10-year guarantee.

As the fine print reads, “We build our 10-Year Sweatshirts to last for at least the next decade. So we’ll mend yours free of charge if it ever rips, tears, or comes apart at the seams within the next 10 years. Let us know, and we’ll work with you to repair it.”

Improving a fan-favorite product is a tricky business. Requested adjustments have to be balanced against features customers love. Flint and Tinder’s design team nailed it with the 10-Year Pullover Hoodie 2.0.

For the most part, it is the same sweatshirt that so many customers have come to know and love. But the looser fit and heavier fabric keep pace with how tastes have changed over the past ten years.

Availability and price

The Flint and Tinder 10-Year Pullover Hoodie 2.0 is available now from Huckberry for $138. It is still cut and sewn entirely in Los Angeles, California.

The one drawback of the redesign is that Huckberry is starting over with the inventory, meaning only four colors are available at launch. They are a grayish-navy blue, a classic heather gray, a faded black and a yellow-olive green.
