Recently it feels like everyone knows at least one person who is getting into ultra-running.

That’s not surprising, considering participation has surged 345 percent in the past 10 years.

Also not surprising is the increase in trail running shoes aimed at ultra-runners: durable, versatile and made to last.

However, none can go the distance quite like Mount to Coast, an emerging brand dedicated solely to ultra and long distance runs. Its newest shoe, the H1, is set to be a road-to-trail trailblazer.

H1 is going the distance, it’s going for speed

Mount to Coast is no stranger to crafting shoes built for long distances. It’s kind of the brand’s thing, after all.

However, this is their first hybrid road-to-trail model, and it’s not just its extreme capability that had me taking notice; it’s also the fact that this shoe is made from organic waste.

Two people are running on a white sandy surface under a cloudy sky. Both are wearing white t-shirts, black shorts, black running vests, and white running shoes. The person in front is also wearing a white cap and blue reflective sunglasses.

That waste takes the form of a new supercritical foam, CircleCell. On par with PEBA, CircleCell midsoles transform up to 20 pounds of organic waste and residual biomass into responsive, comfortable midsoles built to take on any terrain and any distance.

One runner has long dark hair tied back, and the other wears a white cap and blue sunglasses. Large ceramic pots with orange flowers are placed along the wall.
… as well as manicured ones.

The innovation doesn’t end there. The H1 sports a proprietary VersaGrip outsole, designed to deliver exceptional traction and durability across all terrain. In these kicks, you can theoretically run to the trails from your front door and not miss a beat.

The TunedFit Dual Lacing system, another Mount to Coast special, allows for separate customizing of the fit of the forefoot and midfoot.

Ultra running can wreak havoc on feet, causing them to swell and rapidly change shape. Thanks to its fine-tuning capability, the H1 helps prevent injuries that other shoes cannot combat.

Finally, the dual-zone upper also caters to ultra runners. The top portion of the upper utilizes engineered jacquard for an adaptive fit and increased comfort, while the bottom portion is durability-minded, with woven fabric, reinforced with aramid fibers doing the heavy lifting.

At 8.05 ounces with a 6mm drop, the H1 is balanced and stable, while remaining adaptable enough to thrive in both road and trail environments.

Availability and pricing

The H1 will be available in two colorways: White Sands, inspired by the unforgiving yet beautiful National Park in New Mexico, and Joshua Tree, influenced by the sand and cacti present in the California landscape.

While Mount to Coast just opened up preorders, the H1 officially lands on the site the first week of October, and it will retail for $160.
