If you want a smartwatch dedicated solely to running, then you’ll probably end up with something from Garmin, Coros or Suunto on your wrist. But if you want a do-it-all smartwatch that can still track your runs and has plenty of fitness features, then you’re almost certainly choosing an Apple Watch.

If you’re like most people and fall into this second category, then your decision just got a little more complicated, as a new running rival to the Apple Watch has just arrived — and it comes with the backing of a well-established fitness brand.

Not just for golf anymore

The TAG Heuer Connected watch is a strange beast.

With the Apple-driven rise of smartwatches a decade ago, several legacy watch brands, from Breitling to Frederique Constant, launched their own connected watches to try and compete with this new technology. Most of these products are now long gone, with mechanical watch brands realizing that they were competing in an entirely different market from Apple.

And yet, the TAG Heuer Connected watch lives on. Not only that, but it seems to be thriving. There are a few reasons for this, ranging from TAG’s success in marketing itself as a cool, contemporary brand to the watch’s looks and build quality, both of which are comparable to the brand’s mechanical watches and are a significant step up from Apple.

But the biggest reason behind the TAG Heuer Connected’s staying power, by far, is its focus on golf. The watch’s many golf-specific features — like maps for over 40,000 courses, shot tracking, swing analysis and more — have made it a fixture on fairways around the world. One even got a share of the limelight usually reserved for luxury watches from Rolex and Omega when Tommy Fleetwood wore one to celebrate his victory at the PGA Tour Championship earlier this year.

But now, TAG has its sights set on capturing another athletic demographic that wants a dedicated fitness watch that’s also as everyday-wearable as the Apple Watch.

The Connected Calibre E5 has a brand-new operating system — one that TAG developed in-house over a three-year period — and with it comes a host of new features and specs aimed at runners.

There’s a new Running Plans feature that offers users a structured path toward achieving their goals, regardless of their experience level. You can track your progress over weeks to keep yourself accountable, while features like pace trackers and feedback, guided sessions, interval timers and more are designed to seamlessly integrate into your running routine.

New dual-band GNSS technology offers unparalleled GPS tracking. No longer will you have to worry about your signal cutting out while running indoors; the maps remain startingly accurate no matter what. Also new is Made for iPhone certification and Strava integration, making the watch easier to plug into your everyday life and your running community, respectively.

The OS has been overhauled to look cleaner and be more legible, and the Sports app has been redesigned to make your essential information easier to access. And with “best-in-class” sensors for tracking your heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation, steps, calories and more, I would argue it’s pretty important to keep that information handy.

Bringing (New) Balance

Driving home TAG’s new pursuit of runners is a special version of the Connected Calibre E5 made in collaboration with New Balance, a brand that knows a thing or two about running.

The New Balance Edition, which was unveiled last week at an event featuring dual-brand ambassador, four-time Olympic gold medalist and 400m hurdles world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, comes pre-loaded with six New Balance running plans, custom New Balance watch faces and a pair of interchangeable New Balance-branded straps.

One strap is a stretchy textile, while the other is an interesting bimaterial strap with a flexible rubber base and a textile inlay derived from New Balance sneakers. This strap was inspired by the combination of materials found in New Balance running shoes, specifically the Fuel Cell SC Elite v5, which has received a matching TAG Heuer version designed to be paired with the watch.

Both the strap and sneaker share a purple-gray color scheme with neon green highlights, a combo chosen to allude to the heritage of both brands with the green mimicking the glow of the smartwatch’s AMOLED screen.

The New Balance Edition smartwatch is also in the Connected Calibre E5’s new smaller 40mm case size that TAG debuted alongside the existing 45mm version, making it ideal for a wider variety of wrists and more comfortable as a running companion.

The case is made of sandblasted black DLC Grade 2 titanium and features a domed sapphire crystal, materials more associated with luxury watches than smartwatches or running watches. Lastly, we have an improved battery life of up to two days (or up to three for the larger 45mm versions), and 12 hours in running mode.

Pricing and availability

Prices vary for the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5, from $1,600 for a 40mm version in steel on a rubber strap to $2,400 for the new 45mm Golf Edition. The New Balance Edition sits near the top of the range at $2,050, and it is not a limited edition. The matching Fuel Cell running shoes are available separately from New Balance and are priced at $280.
