This past May, WiiM announced that it would be expanding its ecosystem of wireless multi-room audio devices — which, up until now, consisted of wireless streamers and streaming amplifiers — to include the WiiM Sound, the brand’s first-ever wireless speaker. It’s designed to compete with the likes of the Sonos Era 100 or Apple’s HomePod.

However, at the time, the California-based audio maker didn’t disclose exact price and availability information, as well as other key details, for the WiiM Sound. That has finally changed.

The WiiM Sound is a compact wireless speaker designed for individuals who already have a hi-fi system centered around one of WiiM’s existing wireless streamers or streaming amplifiers. The speaker can easily be grouped with other WiiM devices, making it easy to build out a multi-room audio similar.

In terms of size and appearance, the WiiM Sound is most similar to Apple’s HomePod. It’s roughly the same size and has a woven fabric exterior. The obvious difference is that the WiiM Sound also features a front-facing touchscreen color display, which displays items such as album artwork, playlists, and other menus.

The WiiM Sound can be integrated with Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa, making it distinct from other smart speakers. For example, new Sonos speakers only work with Alexa (or Sonos Voice Control). And Apple’s HomePods only work with Siri.

Just like an Era 100 or HomePods, the WiiM Sound can work as a standalone wireless or be stereo paired with another WiiM Sound. You can group one or a stereo pair with WiiM’s wireless subwoofer, the WiiM Sub Pro, to create a 2.1-channel system as well.

As far as sound quality, the WiiM Sound promises to deliver a similar audio experience as its Sonos or Apple rivals.

Each speaker features a 4-inch woofer and dual-balanced mode radiator tweeters, capable of outputting up to 100 watts of power and streaming high-resolution audio at 32-bit/192kHz.

In recent years, WiiM has acted as a disruptor in the multi-room audio space, offering more affordable streamers and streaming amplifiers that work similarly to alternatives made by established brands.

With the WiiM Sound, it’s toeing that line closer than ever. It costs $299, making it the same price as Apple’s larger HomePod and a good chunk more expensive than Sonos’s Era 100, which goes for $219.
