Can This Stunning New Motorcycle Solve the Biggest Problem With Electric Bikes?

When you can power up to 80 percent while taking a quick cappuccino break, range anxiety begins melting away.

Electric motorcycle brands know they have a number of hurdles to overcome in order to win over the skeptics.

While these bikes will never offer the distinctive sound or shifting satisfaction of a traditional moto, they must look good, perform great and ease range anxiety.

If the BBM Hiro’s performance ultimately matches its looks, we could have a huge hit on our hands.

That last requirement has always been the trickiest, but ever-advancing technology is beginning to change that.

Just look at Ducati’s solid-state battery progress — or the latest news from Bilbao, Spain, where BBM’s Hiro Motorcycle promises charge times that’ll make your head spin almost as fast as its wheels do.

Power (quarter) hour

Let’s cut to the chase: How fast are we talking here?

According to the brand, with DC Fast Combo CCS2 charging, the high-powered Hiro can add 100 kilometers (62 miles) of range in nine minutes and reach 80% in 15 minutes.

“This motorcycle isn’t just about what’s possible, it’s about what’s rightfully expected.”

— BBM Co-Founder Guillaume Barras

(Note: The numbers are more pedestrian with less capable charging methods: Reaching 80% takes 78 minutes at a Type 2 Station and 2 hours and 40 minutes at a 220V.)

Considering your average gas stop is probably 5-10 minutes, these numbers go a long way toward making range anxiety fall away.

Like the best electric motos, the Hiro should offer a ton of torque with a simple twist of the throttle.

What’s the secret? Created by brothers Benoit and Guillaume Barras, who founded Hong Kong-based custom motorcycle brand Angry Lane in 2012, BBM has partnered with Belgian EV pioneer Saroléa to develop one potent battery and motor combo.

The repairable and upgradeable 12.96 kWh – 360 V battery uses high-rate 3C Li-ion cells and passive cooling, providing the juice for a motor making 94 horsepower, 150 Nm of torque and 12,000 max rpm.

That translates to a top speed of 118 mph and a city range of 136 miles.

It’s hard to behold renders like this one and not at least daydream about epic city night rides.

While lots of electric moto brands make gaudy promises, you still need a dependable charging infrastructure, and I’ll be much more stoked when renders become real.

But the fact that the Barras brothers have years of custom gas bike building experience gives me some faith.

“We heard the enthusiasts who said electrics are too heavy, too slow to charge and have limited range,” explains confessed ‘petrol-head’ Guillaume Barras. “The key wasn’t to create something new but to balance what’s already here. This motorcycle isn’t just about what’s possible, it’s about what’s rightfully expected.”

Modular magic and more

The brothers’ custom moto background really shows in the aesthetics of the Hiro.

As stunning as the Streetfighter is, they see the Hiro’s frame as a foundation from which multiple different bikes can emerge.

There’s still so much we don’t know about this motorcycle, but what I’ve seen so far is encouraging.

“We didn’t want to create just one motorcycle, but a platform to build multiple models,” says Benoit Barras. “Our experience has taught us that every rider is looking for something special, and the Hiro is designed for this purpose.”

Additional configurations — made possible in part with  body panels crafted from bio-composites — include a Café Racer and a Scrambler, as well as the Roadster below.

No matter which route a customer takes, the end result should be a zippy bike with the handling to navigate gnarly city traffic and agile enough to make two-lane twisties an absolute blast.

While it’s not the lightest electric moto I’ve ever seen, at 440 pounds it still weighs significantly less than a similarly powered gas bike, with a low center of gravity that’ll help you do what every rider prioritizes above all else: keep the shiny side up.

Availability and pricing

The wait to charge might not be long, but actually getting a bike will take more time. BBM plans to release its final pre-production prototypes at key industry events beginning in June 2026. The expected starting price is €16,900, roughly equivalent to $19,600.
