Benelli’s new tempestuous parallel-twin proves that exotic Italian style doesn’t have to command a premium.

Motorcycles from brands like Ducati and Aprilia come with a uniquely exotic appeal. Unfortunately, their Italian pedigree usually means they command a premium compared to rivals from other parts of the world.

That’s precisely what makes Benelli’s Chinese ownership such an interesting proposition. Designs germinate in Pesaro, Italy, but production is outsourced to keep the cost more reasonable.

It’s a strategy that’s already resulted in some sweet small-displacement options like the BKX 125 and the BN 125. The new Tornado 550 proves it in middleweight application.

A breath of fresh air

I mean just look at the thing. After the affordable asking price ($6,000!), Benelli’s best case for swinging a leg over the Tornado 550 is the bike’s striking visuals.

From the distinctive front end to the sharp layered bodywork, it brings a look that you’d expect on much more expensive alternatives. The DRLs are especially eye-catching, as Benelli says their elongated shape is meant to resemble a set of lion’s fangs.

Because they operate independently of the high and low beams, it’s a touch that’s all the more noticeable on the subdued Black and Silver colorways. Still, the white isn’t any less head-turning thanks to its dark headlight surround and vibrant lime wheels.

In any case, the Tornado 500 doesn’t just look premium.

Beyond its striking visuals, Benelli has equipped the bike with some respectable hardware in a set of fully adjustable Marzocchi front forks, a full TFT display and some ABS-equipped Brembo dual-caliper brakes.

Gone like the wind

It’s a package that’s made all the better given what it promises on the road, namely because of the engine. Pull away the Benelli plastics, and you’ll find the same 554cc parallel-twin as that used in sister brand QJMotor’s SRK 600 RS.

In practice, this means that output is an equivalent 56 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 40 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm.

Though not mind-blowing figures for seasoned riders, they’re better than those of rivals in the Ninja 500 and Honda CBR500R (with a smaller drain on your wallet).

Even with a few extra ponies in the stable, it still promises to be an approachable and versatile ride. Seat height comes to a reasonable 30.9 inches, while curb weight is plenty manageable at 437 pounds.

What’s more, although Benelli’s twin promises spirited on-track performance, it’s not lacking when it comes to onboard rider tech. Beyond traction control and selectable riding modes, it boasts integrated TPMS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity.

Availability and pricing

If you’re interested in Benelli’s Tornado 550, it’s available now starting from $5,999.

For perspective, that prices it right in the middle of Kawasaki’s Ninja 500 lineup, and less than Honda’s 2026 CBR500R, ignoring incentives.
