Bamford’s new generation of the sporty Mayfair chronograph is, from a visual perspective, eight watches in one.

What that means is that each watch comes in a set with four interchangeable, recycled bioceramic outer casings and two straps, allowing for eight different combinations.

That may sound like a gimmick used to sell a shoddy watch, but that’s not a move the London-based watchmaker and custom shop would ever make. The Mayfair 2.0 is very affordable, yet it features a respectable Swiss quartz movement with a split-second chronograph complication.

While bioceramic isn’t the most durable material, the inner case is made of titanium, which keeps the watch both lightweight and secure. This is an affordable kick-around watch that is equal parts functional and fun.

Bamford offers the Mayfair 2.0 in four different sets, each with a distinct vibe connecting the dial color scheme, the interchangeable outer casing options and the two straps provided with each watch.

The Green set is geared towards lawn sports like golf and tennis, the Blue set has a nautical vibe, the White set is patriotic for both Americans and Brits and the Pink set is, well, very pink.

An eight for one deal

Bioceramic is a material most notably utilized in the watch industry by Swatch, as seen in its MoonSwatch and Fifty Fathoms collaboration. The Swiss mega-brand uses a proprietary blend of zinc oxide and castor oil extract, but it is unclear what blend Bamford uses.

It is a soft and sturdy material, more resistant to scratching than plastic, but with a similar weight and appearance. The outer casings are secured and removed with a black button at nine o’clock, fitting around the pushers and crown, which are black on every reference.

When the bioceramic casing is in place, the Mayfair 2.0 case measures 40mm in diameter and 13.8mm in height.

One important question that may come to mind with a removable case is water resistance, but the Mayfair 2.0 is good for 100m.

Every set comes with black and white outer casings. The White set adds red and blue, the Green set adds green and yellow, the Pink set adds pink and blue and the Blue set adds blue and yellow.

Each set is complete with a solid rubber strap in either black or white, and a two-piece woven recycled plastic strap with a chevron pattern that matches the two outer casings of each set. Both straps secure with pin-buckles.

In a split second

The Mayfair 2.0 is powered by a Ronda caliber 3540.D quartz movement. It provides this sporty chronograph with a deceptively advanced and very appropriate complication.

The sub-dial at twelve o’clock is a 1/10-second counter, which works in conjunction with the 30-minute counter at nine o’clock to convert into a 10-hour counter after the first half hour has elapsed.

The 30-minute totalizer is decorated with three colored segments that match each watch’s case options, tying the palettes together.

A small seconds dial is placed at six o’clock, and a tachymeter track is printed on the rehaut. The hands and printed hour markers are coated with lume.

Bamford has a talent for balancing fun and experimental physical design with respectable functionality, and the Mayfair 2.0 excels in both categories at a very affordable price.

Availability and price
