It’s been some time since we’ve seen Tom Cruise flex his acting muscles in something other than a blockbuster action movie, but that’s about to change in a big way with the star’s unrecognizable, over-the-top role in the upcoming Digger.

The zany new film from two-time Best Director Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu sees Cruise portray the title character, a powerful and eccentric elderly billionaire who sets off an ecological disaster that could potentially end the world … and he’s the only one who can stop it.

The film’s trailer, which dropped yesterday, has generated a lot of buzz for Cruise’s transformative role, as it sees the ultimate Hollywood star sporting a prosthetic pot belly, a thinning gray combover, old man makeup and a thick southern accent.

But if you’re a watch nerd, you were probably distracted by something else in the trailer: Digger’s gold watch that he wears throughout.

Gold Digger

Right at the start of the trailer, we get a pretty clear view of Digger’s watch as he sits in his bed attempting to get his crusty, decrepit cat to eat something.

Although Digger may be a questionable character, he nevertheless has outstanding taste, as the character’s watch is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time in 18K 5N pink gold with an “Intense Green” dial.

This extra-luxe version of Vacheron’s outstanding travel-ready sports watch debuted at Watches & Wonders 2024 and instantly became one of, if not the most, desirable takes on the highly popular Overseas. (I’d take a Cardinal Points over it, but that’s it.)

The watch features a green lacquered dial with a sunburst finish paired with an 18K 5N pink gold 41mm case and integrated bracelet. The bracelet hides a microadjustable mechanism in its butterfly clasp that can be activated on-wrist, and all of its links are removable for a custom fit.

The bracelet itself can also be removed with the press of a button, thanks to Vacheron’s best-in-the-game strap exchange system, and the watch comes with two green straps, one rubber and one leather, that can quickly be swapped in.

Digger’s Overseas Dual time is powered by the Vacheron Cal. 5110 DT/2 automatic movement, which beats at 4Hz with a 60-hour power reserve. It boasts a Geneva Seal and outstanding finishing, including on its solid gold rotor.

The GMT complication is on a 12-hour scale rather than a 24-hour one, with an AM/PM indicator at 9:00 telling you whether it’s day or night in your second time zone. The local hour hand can be adjusted in both directions with the crown pulled out to the first position, and crossing midnight in either direction will change the date.

The date can also be quick-set using the pusher at 4:00. This pusher screws down, as does the crown. But why would a gold watch need a screw-down crown and pusher? Because this one is water-resistant to an impressive 150m.

There is still much we don’t know about the eponymous character of Digger, but we can deduce some things from his choice of watch. And make no mistake, this watch is a choice. No film character is wearing this specific watch by accident; it was deliberately chosen by a costume designer, or potentially even an outside watch advisor (yes, that’s a real job, and yes, Hollywood, I’m available.)

Per the film’s synopsis, Digger is the “most powerful man in the world.” He’s also a billionaire. Therefore, he could conceivably have any watch he wanted. The Vacheron is pricey at $88,000, but there are many watches that cost far more. So we can assume he didn’t just pick it because it’s expensive. Otherwise, he might have on some $2 million Jacob & Co. monstrosity. This tells me Digger has taste.

The Overseas Dual Time is also not a common watch. If Digger had on a gold Rolex Day-Date, you could just say he’s the average rich guy wearing the stereotypical rich guy’s watch. The Rolex may be tasteful, but it’s far from original. The Vacheron suggests Digger wanted something outside the norm.

The Overseas Dual Time includes two interchangeable straps to go along with its gold bracelet.

Then there’s the feature set of the Vacheron. This is one of the most practical and capable gold watches you can buy. It has convenient travel features, excellent water resistance and highly customizable strap and bracelet options right out of the box. This casts Digger as a man of action who wants a watch that’s both luxurious and utilitarian.

Finally, this watch is pretty new. It was launched just two years ago, meaning Digger hasn’t had it for very long. This tells me the guy keeps up with the latest releases in the industry.

In short, Digger is a watch nerd.

Digger arrives in theaters on October 2. The Overseas Dual Time Ref. 7920V/210R-B965 is available now from Vacheron Constantin boutiques and authorized dealers for $88,000.
