Musical Fidelity is no stranger to high-quality hi-fi components for serious audiophiles — the British audio manufacturer has been making precisely those for over 40 years.

Case in point: In 2023, it introduced the Nu-Vista Vinyl 2, a phono preamplifier designed to partner with a truly elite audiophile turntable. It cost $11,000 on its own.

Now, Musical Fidelity has introduced what is essentially a smaller, more affordable version of that external phono preamp.

A smaller, “slimmer” sibling

The Nu-Vista Vinyl S is a phono preamplifier that’s roughly half the size of the Nu-Vista Vinyl 2. Its chassis and footprint have been designed to perfectly match the brand’s Nu-Vista 600.2 ($10,000) and Nu-Vista 800.2 ($11,500) integrated amplifiers.

But despite the size difference, Musical Fidelity claims that the Nu-Vista Vinyl S promises similar performance to its larger sibling.

Aside from size, the Nu-Vista Vinyl S has an identical core circuitry and the signature Nuvistor Class A topology as its bigger sibling.

It has the same fully discrete, fully balanced design and uses the same state-of-the-art Nuvistor tube technology — which was first invented in the 1950s to address the many shortcomings of conventional tubes — as the Nu-Vista Vinyl 2.

Musical Fidelity claims it achieved this design feat through “meticulous engineering and intelligent design refinements” with the Nu-Vista Vinyl S. (If you’re wondering, the “S” refers to the “slimmer” chassis.)

Wide turntable compatibility

Like the Nu-Vista Vinyl 2, the smaller Nu-Vista Vinyl S is compatible with a wide range of turntables, with either moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) cartridges, as it gives you the option to fine-tune numerous settings for gain, capacitance, impedance and EQ.

Additionally, it has numerous inputs, two balanced XLR and two unbalanced RCA, which actually allows you to connect it to more than one turntable at once, each with its own fine-tuned settings.
