In 2023, Nicholas Biebuyck, TAG Heuer’s Global Heritage Director, met with a group of Australian TAG Heuer collectors known for their passionate appreciation of the brand’s motosports watches.

This meeting kicked off the design process for what would become one of the most beautiful Carrera Chronographs ever produced, and a paradigm of everything watch fans love about the iconic collection.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Australian Limited Edition is something of a “thank you” gift, designed with and for the brand’s dedicated Australian fans. As such, the design draws inspiration from two historically significant and highly sought-after vintage references from the golden age of auto racing chronographs.

But the foundation of the watch is the Carrera Glassbox, which was introduced to much fanfare in 2023. The high-domed sapphire crystal, which replaces a bezel, creates a magnified view of the tachymeter scale printed on the raised flange.

The Carrera Australian Limited Edition’s ideal blend of new and old elements results in the Carrera’s perfect form. It is a brand-new design, so faithful to the collection’s 1960s heyday that it could easily have existed back then.

Something old, something new…

The color scheme for the Carrera Australian Limited Edition is borrowed from one of the most famous examples of its sister collection, the Autavia. The metallic panda dial, adorned with a blue chronograph seconds hand and five-minute markers, debuted in 1969 with the Autavia 1163T “Jo Siffert.”

Jo Siffert was a famous Swiss Formula 1 driver who became Heuer’s first-ever brand ambassador. His signature reference was also the brand’s first watch to feature a collection name on the dial, a practice that would later become standard.

The accent color has been expanded to include both chronograph counter hands, creating a clear division from the running time. Apart from the concave seconds track printed on the inside of the raised flange and raised chronograph sub-dials, the dial is nearly identical to the “Jo Siffert.”

Of course, being a Carrera and not an Autavia, the tachymeter has been relocated inside the crystal. And there is one more significant visual update, which comes from an even more coveted Heuer release.

The metallic dial has contrast brushing, creating three vertical segments inspired by Côtes de Genève finishing. This detail is lifted from the solid gold Carrera “Success Watch,” personally gifted from Jack Heuer to Formula 1 race winners in the early 1970s.

The center line runs between the 11 and 1 batton hour markers, down to 5 and 7, helping to define the flush small seconds dial, marked only by 11 black dashes printed directly on the dial. The minimalist sub-dial leaves room for a date window at 6:00.

My one critique is that only the hour and minute hands have lume. The rest of the dial goes black in the dark, which somewhat defeats the purpose of putting lume on those hands at all. I would expect at least the baton hour markers to get some lume.

Availability and price

As with most of the Carrera Glassbox collection, this Aussie exclusive runs on the TAG Heuer caliber TH20-00 automatic movement. It provides a thirty-minute counter and a 12-hour counter, beats at 4Hz and has an 80-hour power reserve.

The movement is finished to match the dial with Côtes de Genève brushing on the plate and blue detailing, all displayed through a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.

Hidden beneath the blending of old and new features, resulting in the Carrera’s perfected form, is an ode to appreciation. Both watches drawn upon for inspiration were created by Jack Heuer specifically for drivers that he admired.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Australian Limited Edition is available exclusively from the brand’s boutiques Down Under for A$11,800 (~US $7,838). Moreover, it is a limited edition of 75 units, so even the locals will have trouble landing one.
