While the knife and multi-tool industry is so prolific that we publish robust roundups pretty much weekly, the reality is that the vast majority of designs come and go pretty quickly.

Only a handful of silhouettes survive to see spinoffs extending out across the years, children and grandchildren carrying precious DNA with timeless appeal.

Residing effortlessly in that hallowed category is Böker’s Urban Trapper. Designed by Brad Zinker and in production since at least 2015 (when we first covered it), the brand’s most popular gents’ knife is currently available in 9 different varieties.

The latest still manages to tread into uncharted territory, as the Urban Trapper NXT is so far the only edition to offer automatic deployment.

Speedy steel

Let me say right off the bat that I wrestle with calling this deployment mechanism “controversial.”

As GP exec editor Jack Seemer has pointed out to me, auto knives are arguably no more dangerous than kitchen knives, which account for the majority of stabbings.

This particular knife is unflinchingly automatic thanks to an enlarged precision push button and an integrated wire spring.

They also boost accessibility for some users and push the boundaries of knife design in a way that appeals to enthusiasts and collectors.

Yet, the commerce and/or carry of auto knives is prohibited or somehow restricted in more than a dozen US states, which means that regardless of how you or I feel about them, their existence invites some level of, yes, controversy.

Now let’s talk about this particular knife, which is unflinchingly automatic, thanks to an enlarged precision push button and an integrated wire spring.

Press that button and the blade pops out with a swift, smooth click, as easy as it gets. That same button serves as the release mechanism.

Elite ingredients

Complementing what Böker calls “explosive automatic” deployment are premium materials befitting a high-end gentleman’s knife.

The 3.35-inch drop-point blade is made of CPM MagnaCut, currently the clubhouse leader when it comes to blending edge retention, hardness, corrosion resistance and toughness.

While this iteration is not the first to brandish this vaunted super steel, it’s the only one of those currently offered to carry it.

Adorned with Zinker and Böker’s logos, the matte black handle is made of high-strength aluminum, which offers a compelling combo of durability and relatively low weight.

While this variant is not the lightest Urban Trapper out there — a distinction belonging to the skeletonized, 1.69-ounce OG — the (open length) 7.44-inch NXT tips the scales at a still pretty feathery 2.33 ounces.

The included clip makes pocket carry easy, but check local laws before slinking around in that fashion.

Adding just a bit to that figure and very well worth its weight is the reversible tip-up stainless steel deep-carry pocket clip.

Befitting a gentleman, the NXT also comes with a felt pouch to keep it ensconced in luxury when not in use.

Availability and pricing

The Böker Urban Trapper NXT is available for pre-order now for $249.

Editor’s Note: As noted above, auto knives are among the most heavily regulated knives available. Before purchasing one, familiarize yourself with your local regulations to ensure you’re adhering to the law.
