Toyota’s Budget Sports Car Gets a Retro Redesign Honoring a Legend

Polarizing as they are, pop-up headlights make for an undeniably effective visual addition to the Toyota 86.

Upon the launch of the 86 (known as the Scion FR-S in the United States) back in 2012, Toyota revived the legendary AE86 in more than just name.

That’s because, between a lightweight chassis and a punchy rear-wheel drivetrain, the car also resurrected the spirit of its predecessor through sharp handling and overall slideability.

With the launch of the subsequent GR86, Toyota only reaffirmed its commitment to honoring the iconic Corolla by making the ‘86’ part of the moniker global in nature.

The front end makes for a surprisingly convincing dupe, especially when you consider the extent of the modifications required.

However, it’s the aftermarket that’s drawn the most direct connection, as a company by the name of Result Japan has taken that shared lineage to the next level with a redesign unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

A Radwood-worthy visual overhaul

It’s called the ‘Neo86,’ and it’s a fitting name for a body kit designed to give the Toyota’s budget 86 sports car a retro aesthetic reminiscent of the AE86 popularized by Initial D.

Around the front, you’ll find the most dramatic aspects of the transformation. Along with ditching the stock headlights for a pair of quintessentially 80s pop-ups, Result Japan also added a sharper hood and a more angular front bumper.

In combination with the revised fenders and some relocated turn signals and fog lights, it makes for a highly effective overhaul. Regardless of whether the design ‘works’ for you (the jury’s still out among the Motoring editors), you can’t deny that it makes for a convincing dupe from head-on.

The side profile makes for the most visually challenging angle, as you can see both AE86 and GR86 influences.

Of course, the illusion is exposed as you move to the back of the car — Result Japan didn’t try to emulate the AE86’s hatchback roofline, and the taillights are very clearly from a modern 86 rather than something from an era of pop-up headlights.

Still, thanks to touches like the oversized decklid spoiler, the boxier rear bumper, fender flares, two-tone livery and Watanabe wheels, it’s not as jarring as a visual transformation of this degree would typically seem. I’m not usually one for “backdating,” but something about the Neo86 just works.

Result Japan didn’t try to emulate the roofline, and that’s probably for the best on a car like the more curvaceous GR86.

This isn’t the company’s first rodeo

In any case, this isn’t Result Japan’s first rodeo. Far from it, in fact.

The outfit offers aftermarket body kits for everything from kei cars like the Honda S660 to hatches like the GR Corolla and even hybrids like the Prius.

Across the board, Result Japan’s overhauls are visually challenging, be it through the addition of headlight lens covers, gaping grille profiles, expansive fenders or oversized rear wings.

Put another way — the outfit doesn’t do subtlety, so this Neo86 kit makes for a refreshingly restrained option compared to some of what else it has on the market.

Pricing and availability

Per Result Japan, the Neo86 body kit is set to be available for pre-order starting at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon, which will run from January 9th.

While availability and pricing have yet to be announced, the company does advertise shipping to countries outside of Japan. Moreover, for some perspective, Result Japan’s GR 86 widebody kit will run you ¥638,000 (about $4,000).
