Jeep Unexpectedly Cans the Most Popular Variant of Its Iconic Off-Roader

The chance to score a new Wrangler 4xe and other similar models is unfortunately coming to an end.

In a very shocking move, Stellantis reportedly just cancelled its whole range of gas-electric plug-in hybrid models, including some top-selling Jeep 4xe models. Word comes exclusively from The Drive, who received word about the cancellation from a Stellantis spokesperson via email.

That means the chance to score a brand spankin’ new Wrangler 4xe, Grand Cherokee 4xe and Chrysler Pacifica PHEV is all coming to an end. This comes as a major surprise since the Wrangler 4xe actually holds the title as the best-selling plug-in hybrid model.

It’s also a surprise for the Grand Cherokee 4xe, which to date, also was one of the top-selling variants of Jeep’s midsize SUV.

Both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe immediately became a smash hit when Jeep launched the models. Both solved one of the biggest shortcomings for many, which was less-than-stellar fuel economy.

Off-roaders even also grew a liking for the PHEV off-roaders for their instantaneous torque, which came compliments of the powertrain’s electric motor.

The reason why Stellantis pulled the plug is a little unclear. However, according to the email issued, it comes down to a change in the automaker’s strategy.

“Stellantis continually evaluates its product strategy to meet evolving customer needs and regulatory requirements. With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

“This approach reinforces the company’s commitment to offering advanced propulsion systems that maximize efficiency and provide options from internal combustion to hybrid range‑extended, and fully electric solutions.”

Sounds rather ambiguous. But some have speculated that the disappearance of federal tax credits for electrified vehicles played a major role.

Following the elimination of federal tax credits disappeared, EVs and plug-in hybrid models have become significantly more expensive. And because of the price jump, sales have subsequently fallen off a cliff.

Troubling signs began surfacing

The Drive further reports that their discontinuation wasn’t that much of a surprise. A reader apparently tipped the outlet about the disappearance of the option for the 4xe models on Jeep’s “Build and Price” website.

Another supposed reason for the discontinuation is the existence of a “stop-sale” initiative due to several existing recall campaigns.

There’s currently no word as to whether the models will return or not, which admittedly, leaves some loose ends. On top of the fact that the 4xe models were some of Jeep’s best-sellers, the move also contradicts Stellantis’ latest electrification and “freedom of choice” multi-energy strategy.
